Abstract

Intercultural competence is an essential skill for students in today’s globalized educational landscape, particularly in English language learning contexts. This study investigates students’ intercultural competence, focusing on their ability to adapt and communicate effectively across diverse cultural boundaries. Employing a quantitative survey approach, data were collected from 53 university students engaged in English language programs. Findings reveal varying levels of competence: while 35.8% of participants reported ease in adapting to cultural differences, nearly half (49.1%) expressed neutrality, indicating limited confidence or experience. Challenges such as language barriers (62.3%) and unfamiliarity with social customs (20.8%) were identified as significant obstacles. Despite these challenges, students participating in cultural exchange programs or engaging with diverse peers demonstrated enhanced competence, gaining enriched perspectives, improved communication skills, and stronger social bonds. Positive experiences included language acquisition, cultural understanding, and mutual respect. To address gaps, the study recommends integrating intercultural communication training, cultural awareness workshops, and experiential learning programs into curricula. Additionally, fostering supportive environments through mentorship and safe spaces for dialogue is essential. These interventions aim to empower students, equipping them for effective communication and collaboration in multicultural academic and professional settings.

Abstract

This paper focuses on the praxis of simplicity among Minahasan affiliates of the Christian Evangelical Church in Minahasa (GMIM) as a spirituality that opposes consumeristic religion. A qualitative case study design was employed to gather data in the form of in-depth interviews, participant observation, and analysis of documents using purposely chosen congregants who always engage in simple living in family, ministry, and everyday life. Data were interpreted using thematic analysis, which was informed by the theological-hermeneutical framework. The results indicate that simplicity is not considered an absence but a planned, religious lifestyle of sufficiency, gratitude, humility, and reliance on God’s providence. In practical terms, the concept of simplicity is reflected in judicious handling of finances, low-profile consumption, non-competitive involvement in worship, and judicious use of social media. Congregants define this way of life as a protest against consumerist ideas such as extravagance, flaunting, and spiritual arrogance, which are becoming more pronounced in church activities and general society. This opposition is anchored in the merging of Minahasan cultural norms, particularly mapalus (mutual help) and the GMIM ethos of love, service, and modesty. This study concludes that the praxis of simplicity among GMIM congregants is a situational spirituality of resistance that protects and revitalizes the church’s theological identity. It provides pastoral implications for faith formation, leadership, and ecclesial practices that are useful in enabling congregants to resist religious consumerism while being involved in modern social life in the plural context of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the perceptions, attitudes, and responses of the congregation of GMIM Golgota Bukit Ranomuut Permai toward mental health issues, as well as to identify the theological, social, and cultural factors shaping those responses. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with purposive sampling techniques, the research involved 26 participants drawn from church ministers (Pelsus), youths, and general congregants, selected through an open online questionnaire. The data were analyzed thematically and validated through source triangulation. The findings indicate that 96.2% of respondents had previously heard about mental health issues, reflecting a high level of awareness. However, 65.4% reported having experienced stress, anxiety, or depression in recent months, even though access to professional services remains hindered by limited knowledge (12 mentions) and fear of social stigma (8 mentions). Although 65.4% of respondents were aware of the existence of mental health services, one-third still lacked understanding of how to access them. Suggested interventions from the congregation include routine educational programs in the church, the provision of free consultations, the establishment of support groups, the cultivation of a listening culture, and structured spiritual accompaniment. The study reveals a gap between awareness and action, influenced by religious stigma and limited information. It recommends integrating mental health literacy into pastoral ministry, establishing a pastoral referral system, and fostering collaboration between the church and professional practitioners. The church is positioned as an agent of social transformation capable of providing a safe space for holistic healing—physical, psychological, and spiritual—within the framework of a theology of shalom. This research offers practical contributions to the development of contextual pastoral care and enriches academic discourse on the intersection of religion, culture, and mental health in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract: Church leadership in the modern era often falls into hierarchical and administrative patterns, losing the living and contextual shepherding touch. The main problem of this research is the gap between leadership exercised within the worship setting and the presence of the shepherd in the daily lives of the congregation. The purpose of this study is to explore, formulate, and affirm a model of church leadership rooted in the example of Jesus Christ as the Great Shepherd, leadership that is authentic in sincerity, humble in service, and impactful through acts of love. This research employs the library research method with a biblical study and pastoral literature approach. The results show that Christlike leadership is able to connect the Word proclaimed in worship with the practice of faith in everyday life. The contribution of this research lies in affirming a model of church leadership that is contextual, holistic, and transformative for the life of the congregation and the wider community.

Abstract

Abstract Ecclesial fellowship in GMIM Filadelfia Wawontulap has ceased being a ritualized liturgy to a crucial place of creating genuine relationships, solving conflicts, and the assimilation of Biblical values and Minahasan culture. Through descriptive-interpretative qualitative research approach, the study analyzes the role of fellowship as a merging and healing process among church members and uses five themes namely, the strengthening of social-spiritual relationships, the church as a reconciler, the leadership of pastors and elders, the integration of mapalus in koinonia, and the means of increasing participation and belonging. Results indicate that social bonding among fellowship activities at the column, commission, and categorical levels, generational relational gaps, and helpful mutual support between generations, be it at the hospital visit or a common meal. The church plays an active role in mediating conflicts in an all-inclusive pastoral ministry which involves prayer, open dialogue, and personal accompaniment. Although pastors and elders are appreciated as spiritual advisors, members want more personal contact and less formality to help bring openness, particularly among young people and those who are shy. The Minahasan cultural ethics, especially of mapalus (mutual cooperation), are highly effective social capital, and support equality, solidarity, and togetherness, which is similar to New Testament koinonia. Some of the best approaches to promote participation are informal intergenerational events, youth participation with planning the events, frequent visits to the aged and non-judgmental area where the youth can share their personal plight.

Abstract

This research is a literature study that explores the role of social media in the context of the church's mission, especially in efforts to reach and influence apologists in the digital age. The digital age has changed the way people interact, learn, and seek information, and churches have had to adapt to be relevant in fulfilling their mission. This study uses a qualitative approach with content analysis of Christian mission content on TikTok with several digital mission actors. The aim is to understand how messages of faith are constructed, conveyed and received in the context of a multireligious society in the digital space. The results show that the practice of mission on TikTok presents two sides: great potential in reaching the digital generation and affirming faith, but also ethical risks when missions are carried out without considering the sensitivity of other religions. From an ethical review, this study confirms the importance of carrying out the mission in a relevant way and contextual awareness. Reflective, communicative, and exclusive missions not only demonstrate faithfulness to Christ, but also present a peaceful testimony in the midst of a diversity of religious identities. By analyzing the existing literature, this study tries to answer some key questions that pose ethical dilemmas: how to stay true to the call to mission without hurting or offending other religious identities? God's mission must be accomplished.

Abstract
