Abstract

Background: The high production of capture fisheries in Majene Regency is not balanced by a marketing system and infrastructure in the form of adequate fishing ports and fish processing units. Findings: It is recorded that currently Majene Regency only has 2 (two) fishing port units, namely PPI Palipi and PPP Banggae with a total of 30,887 fishermen, the largest in West Sulawesi out of a total of 57,318 people. With these conditions, the catch of Majene Regency fishermen is mostly sold in the middle of the sea. Methods: This paper uses a literature review method sourced from literature, such as scientific articles, books, journals, and online media. Conclusion: The number of fishing port infrastructure in Majene Regency is still relatively low when viewed from the amount of production in other regencies/cities in West Sulawesi Province. So a government policy step is needed as a form of support for economic growth that is in accordance with the potential in Majene Regency, one of which is fisheries. Thus, it is hoped that fishery products which are superior commodities can be distributed to areas that do not have the potential for capture fisheries resources or the exchange of commodities through a buying and selling system.

Abstract

Background: Majene Regency, which is located in West Sulawesi Province, is part of the Republic of Indonesia State Fisheries Management Area (WPPNRI) 713. It has a coastline length of approximately 125 km2, a sea area of more than 13,124 km2, and a land area of around 947.84 km2. The potential fish resources are 1,026,599 million tonnes per year, mainly consisting of small pelagic fish, large pelagic fish, demersal fish, coral fish, penaeid shrimp, lobsters, crabs, and squid. Methods: This research uses scientific literature sources, government publications, policy documents, academic databases including scientific journals, and books to obtain a comprehensive and up-to-date view. Findings: Data shows that capture fisheries production in Majene Regency produces 7,458 tonnes of marine fisheries products. Conclusion: This increased from the previous year's 4.36 percent from 2017 to 2018. The largest marine fisheries production came from Banggae District, contributing 21.87 percent to Majene Regency's fisheries production. Aquaculture production originating from ponds decreased by 46.36 percent from 2017 to 2018. The amount of investment entering Western Province is still relatively low, namely being ranked 30th out of 34 provinces in Indonesia and in last position. out of 5 provinces in Sulawesi.

Abstract

The utilization of capture fisheries resources in West Sulawesi Province is currently at its lowest level compared to five other provinces in the Sulawesi region, although overall utilization conditions have reached fully exploited and over-exploited status. The low utilization is caused by the lack of fishing facilities and infrastructure as well as the lack of empowerment of fishermen in the province. This study aims to analyze the level of utilization of capture fisheries resources and the factors influencing them in West Sulawesi Province. The data collection method used was a survey and interviews with 50 fishermen in 5 districts/cities. The results show that the average productivity of fishermen's fishing is still very low compared to other provinces in Sulawesi. In addition to the lack of capital and infrastructure, the low level of education and skills of fishermen is also a major cause. Therefore, various efforts are needed to empower fishermen through training and capital assistance so that the utilization of capture fisheries resources can be optimal and sustainable.

Abstract

The management of fishing ports is increasingly associated with environmental issues due to an increased in operational activities. This research aims to review the waste management policies in fishing ports. The method used is a qualitative approach through field observations and descriptive analysis at the Karangantu Nusantara Fishing Port. The research results indicate that the Karangantu Nusantara Fishing Port has not yet established specific regulations governing waste management. In addition, limited resources and low community participation have resulted in waste management still carried out using conventional methods. The high volume of waste generated by fishermen, fish traders, and service users necessitates the implementation of sustainable waste management through partnerships to reduce waste at Karangantu Nusantara Fishing Port.

Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), declared by 193 countries at the UN on September 25, 2015, serve as the foundation for global development. Building upon previous agendas, the SDGs emphasize three pillars of sustainable development: social, economic, and environmental. Cities, as centers of economic growth, face complex challenges in waste management. Urban waste, especially organic waste, requires special handling as it tends to decompose and create adverse environmental impacts if not managed properly. In the context of Indonesia, more than 65% of urban waste is organic, primarily food leftovers. To mitigate its impact, waste management is not sufficient merely with collection, transportation, and disposal at final disposal sites (TPA). Waste must be processed into useful goods, such as through recycling. This research proposes a Zero Waste approach to urban waste management. This concept involves waste prevention from the outset, reduction, reuse, recycling, and minimal waste residual management. Many cities worldwide, such as Canberra, Adelaide, and Stockholm, have successfully implemented Zero Waste strategies. In the Indonesian context, Surabaya is a successful example of effective urban waste management, involving various programs from waste banks to electricity generation from landfill gas. However, challenges in urban waste management persist. There is a need for new initiatives, such as involving more stakeholders from private to public sectors in the Zero Waste concept, and strengthening the government's role in implementing regulations supporting sustainable waste management. Additionally, education and public campaigns are crucial to raise awareness among the public about the importance of responsible waste management. Thus, this research highlights the importance of Zero Waste strategies in addressing urban waste management issues to achieve sustainable development goals.
