Abstract

Aims: COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019) has significantly impacted infection control, highlighting the vulnerabilities of the global healthcare system. This study evaluates measurable outcomes and barriers in nursing students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices, and barriers to infection prevention before and after COVID-19. Method: systematic review, with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) registered on PROSPERO: CRD42022322706. Using the PICO framework for article selection: Population (involving nursing students), Intervention/exposure (infection control or prevention), Compare and Outcome (knowledge, attitudes, and practice). We searched nine databases from March to June 2022, with inclusion criteria for full-text articles published in English from 2012 to 2022. The study quality used The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal tool and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). PICO synthesis for analysis. Results: Of 3,030 articles, only 15 met the criteria for inclusion: Cross-sectional (12/15, 80%), Descriptive study (2/12, 13%), and pre-post study (1/15, 6.67%). Infectious disease (4/15, 26.6%) and All disaster events (4/15, 26.6%), with the condition: pre-COVID-19 (11/15,73.3%), and during COVID-19 (4/15, 26.6%). The five themes were: (1) nursing students' knowledge level regarding infection control standards, (2) nursing students' attitudes towards infection control standards, (3) nursing students' practice on infection control standards, (4) factors affecting infection control in nursing students, (5) roles of nursing schools and hospitals in infection control. Conclusion: Nursing students showed increased knowledge, but gaps in attitudes and practice remain. Future efforts should develop standardized infection prevention curricula, integrate social media training, and strengthen academic-healthcare partnerships.

Abstract

Tropical diseases are associated with tropical regions, but global access travel, climate change, and environmental factors affecting disease vectors may spread to non-endemic countries. This review reinforces the view of nurses' roles and challenges to providing care for tropical diseases. This scoping review search included: SCOPUS, PubMed, EBSCO Medline, Science Direct, and citation search: Google Scholar. Studies included if the population was nurses or part of a multidisciplinary or provider intervention on tropical diseases and original English articles between 2011 and 2021 with various methods. From 773 studies identified, 23 met the inclusion criteria. Three themes emerged: 1) nurses role as health providers, educators, motivators, leaders, collaboration, and coordination; 2) providing safe working and job satisfaction; and 3) The role of organizations, health systems, and policymakers. There were also three challenges: 1) lack of skills, knowledge, and training for nurses, 2) the stigma of tropical diseases, 3) sociocultural approach. The role and practice of nursing in tropical diseases vary across healthcare settings, influenced by nurses' stigma, knowledge, training, job safety, and satisfaction. Nurse lack knowledge and training compared to other health workers. Potential to increase nurse participation with a sociocultural approach and involving nurse's leadership roles require further research

Abstract

Background: Pregnancy in women with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis is a rare and high-risk condition, particularly when there is nonadherence to hemodialysis regimens. Unlike other chronic diseases, evidence on the effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing (MI) in improving adherence among pregnant CKD patients remains very limited. Objective: To evaluate the impact of MI on adherence to hemodialysis management in a pregnant with patient CKD. Case report: There was a 23-year-old woman on hemodialysis for four years at 24 weeks' gestation. The patient was non-adherent to dialysis, medication, and antenatal care (ANC). MI was delivered in five sessions (lasting 30-45 minutes) for four weeks, using a logbook as reading materials. Results: MI improved patient awareness and communication with healthcare providers. However, it was not fully effective in ensuring adherence with hemodialysis management, medication consumption, ANC visits, and long-term contraceptive choices in this pregnant patient with CKD. Key barriers included financial issues, childcare responsibilities, and unplanned pregnancy. Conclusion: MI is recommended in nursing practice to build patient trust and understanding.
