Abstract

This paper explores the position of women in the leading green tourism initiatives in Balikpapan, Indonesia, an eco-tourism hot spot confronting rigorous environmental issues and possibilities in sustainable development. The research examines the unique roles and difficulties in green tourism, focusing on their impact on environmental stewardship and community-driven sustainable practices. The main research question is How are women involved in and what barriers do they face towards sustainable tourism in Balikpapan? This research is novel in showcasing the singular power of women in a male-dominated industry and a call for gender-inclusive tourism development policies, a philosophy yet to be treated in the existing literature. Based on the qualitative case study method, this research was based on qualitative interviews conducted with five essential government, environment, and tourism informants’ sectors. Research shows that women are deeply involved in doing business sustainably to promote sustainable tourism, where cultural practices and traditional knowledge face ongoing cultural barriers and limited access to resources. Conclusions highlight the importance of gender-specific support, listing conducting initiatives to accommodate women, such as dedicated training in this field. The study demonstrates that helping how can women's leadership in green tourism promote sustainability development in Balikpapan as a model for other regions.

Abstract

This study examines the adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) among Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Balikpapan, Indonesia, using the Technology-Organization-Environment (TOE) framework. Through qualitative interviews with seven MSME owners and employees, we explored their perspectives on AI, current technology use, challenges in digital adoption, and external support needs. Findings indicate that while MSME owners recognize the potential of AI to enhance competitiveness, its adoption remains limited, with most relying on basic digital tools like POS systems and social media for marketing. Key challenges include financial constraints, limited digital literacy among staff, and a lack of technical training. Moreover, external support, such as government-backed training programs and financial incentives, is minimal, slowing the digital transition process. This study suggests that expanding AI awareness and providing targeted training could address these barriers, while government policies that promote digital infrastructure and collaboration with tech providers could further support MSME digital transformation. Future research should consider broader variables within the TOE framework, such as cultural and policy-related factors, to provide a more comprehensive understanding of AI adoption in MSMEs across various sectors.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the influences of adaptive leadership on Gen Z's mindset in adopting work culture and promoting organizational sustainability. Integrating traditional leadership with Gen Z’s mindset is increasingly critical as Balikpapan's industrial sector undergoes a generational shift. This research will explore the challenges of aligning Gen Z’s mindset with strategies that sustain organizational effectiveness in dynamic cultures. Specifically, it examines how adaptive leadership shapes Gen Z’s mindset and acceptance of workplace culture, promoting organizational sustainability. This study uniquely provides empirical evidence on the mediating role of the Gen Z mindset within the adaptive leadership and sustainability framework in a developing economy, emphasizing the intergenerational connection between leadership and organizational culture. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving 208 Gen Z employees in Balikpapan and utilizing both quantitative data and qualitative interviews. Analyses included Cronbach's Alpha, composite reliability, and structural equation modelling using partial least squares (SEM-PLS). The findings indicate that adaptive leadership significantly influences Gen Z mindset and work culture adoption. Furthermore, the Gen Z mindset mediates the relationship between corporate culture and leadership, which is essential for sustainability, although it does not directly affect sustainability. Conclusion: Adaptive leadership empowers and involves Gen Z, promoting lasting organizational and cultural transformation. The findings offer HR specialists and business leaders insights to foster intergenerational relationships and boost organizational effectiveness.
