Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly changed the social landscape for younger generations, affecting their communication styles and consequently their mental health. This research investigates the critical role of family resilience in improving family communication and its impact on family functioning, specifically as a strategy to strengthen mental well-being in generation Z. Family resilience is defined as the ability of a family to adapt, recover and thrive amid adversity, which promotes emotional support and shared strength among its members. Family communication includes the exchange of thoughts, feelings and information, which facilitates understanding and connectedness within the family unit. Family functioning refers to how families cope, communicate and interact, involving critical dimensions such as cohesion and flexibility that are important for maintaining healthy relationships. This study used a non-experimental quantitative research design.  Data collection used convenience techniques and obtained 251 participants aged 17 to 24 years. The measurement tools used in this study include: Family Assessment Device (FAD) to evaluate family functioning, Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ) for family resilience, and family communication scale to measure communication dynamics. The results showed a significant positive correlation between family resilience and family functioning (r = 0.90), family resilience and family communication (r = 0.80), and family communication and family functioning (r = 0.83). Family communication was shown to act as a partial mediator in the relationship between family resilience and family functioning. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of building family resilience and family communication to strengthen family functioning, ultimately contributing to improved mental health for generation Z after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

Globalization has caused significant changes in the lifestyle patterns of young adults, including a decline in marriage rates, especially among the Millennial generation. In Indonesia, many Millennials are delaying or even not considering marriage. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors that influence marriage readiness. This study aims to analyze the influence of marriage perceptions and social support on marriage readiness among the Millennial generation. The method used in this study is quantitative, involving 775 unmarried individuals aged 28–43 years. The instruments used for collection were The Marital Readiness Scale to measure marriage readiness, Marriage Perception Scale to measure marriage perceptions, and Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support to measure social support. The results of the analysis using Pearson correlation showed a significant positive relationship between marriage perceptions and marriage readiness ( r = 0.480), as well as between social support and marriage readiness ( r = 0.542). In addition, linear regression analysis showed that marriage perceptions contributed 23% to marriage readiness, while social support contributed 29%. These findings suggest that positive views of marriage and adequate social support can improve marriage readiness among Millennials, leading to a more stable and harmonious marriage. Improved marriage readiness can contribute to happier and longer-lasting marriages. Therefore, interventions to improve perceptions and social support may be effective strategies in preparing Millennials for successful marriages.

Abstract

Generation Z is the dominant demographic group in Indonesia and is widely known as digital natives, having grown up in the era of digital communication. Their communication patterns tend to prioritize efficiency and are largely visual based; however, this can negatively impact the quality of direct, face-to-face family interactions. A lack of in-person communication increases the risk of excessive internet use and contributes to mental health issues. Effective family communication plays a crucial role in supporting adolescents’ psychological well-being, and one of the key contributing factors is family resilience. Family resilience encompasses belief systems, organizational processes, and communication processes within the family. This study aims to examine the influence of family resilience on family communication among Generation Z in Indonesia. A quantitative approach was employed using convenience sampling, involving 210 participants. The instruments used were the Family Communication Scale (FCS) and the Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ). The analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between family resilience and family communication (R² = 0.84). These findings suggest that stronger family resilience contributes to better family communication quality and may help reduce family conflicts and the negative impacts of excessive technology use.
