The Tempe Lake plays a crucial role in the livelihoods of the community, serving as a source of sustenance. The fisherman community of the floating house around Lake Tempe possesses distinct traditions and local wisdom in the utilization of fishery resources within the lake. This research aims to analyse the perceptions and compliance of the community regarding the utilization of fishery resources in Lake Tempe. The research is situated in the village of Pallimae, a community whose fishermen inhabit floating houses of Lake Tempe. Perceptions are assessed based on the understanding of the presence and utilization of fishery resources in Lake Tempe. Community compliance is evaluated in the management of freshwater fishery resources grounded in local wisdom values. Perceptions and compliance data were gathered through questionnaires and processed using regression analysis. The results of the perception and compliance tests indicate that the floating house fisherman community in Lake Tempe adheres to local wisdom values related to fisheries resource management, encompassing (1)Conceptual levels, including prohibitions against damaging the lake’s ecosystem; (2)Value-based behaviours, such as prohibitions against littering in the lake and refraining from using coarse language and arrogance; and (3)Cultural and customary practices, including the traditional Maccera tappareng ceremony.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate implementing sustainable halal tourism practices on Rubiah Island, Sabang, Indonesia, emphasizing the integration of local wisdom rooted in Acehnese culture and Islamic Sharia principles. The study examines how these elements contribute to a unique form of tourism that respects religious and cultural diversity. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through literature review, stakeholder interviews, and field observations. Data analysis involved thematic analysis to identify recurring themes and insights regarding the influence of Acehnese local wisdom and Islamic Sharia principles on tourism practices on the island. Key sustainable tourism practices include halal-certified activities such as environmentally responsible snorkeling, promoting hospitality, and dolphin-friendly tourism that minimizes disturbances to marine habitats. Notably, Rubiah Island adheres to a policy of no permanent structures, maintains curated tour packages, highlights its historical significance, and is near protected forest areas. These efforts underscore Rubiah Island's commitment to sustainable tourism principles, aiming to preserve its natural beauty and cultural heritage while providing a halal-friendly experience for visitors. This research contributes to understanding how sustainable practices can be harmoniously integrated with Islamic values and local customs to enhance tourism development in Aceh.

Abstract

Environmental degradation represents not only a physical crisis but also a profound spiritual and ethical disconnect between humanity and nature. This study aims to analyze the synergy between eco-theology and local cultural wisdom in constructing a contextual interfaith ecological ethics framework in Indonesia. Using a qualitative literature-based approach, this research examines eco-theological constructions within Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Indigenous Beliefs, alongside manifestations of local wisdom in conservation practices such as Subak, Sasi, and Leuweung Larangan. The findings reveal that integrating spiritual principles with cultural practices enriches the moral dimension of environmental conservation and significantly enhances community participation. The study concludes that the ecological crisis is fundamentally a crisis of values, requiring a holistic approach that integrates theological insights with cultural practice. The resulting “Interfaith Ecological Ethics” framework offers a transformative pathway for sustainable development in Indonesia, rooted in society’s spiritual and cultural values, while challenging dominant secular-anthropocentric environmental paradigms.
