Abstract

Abstract. Food color is one of the things that consumers consider when choosing and sorting food. So the use of coloring in food seems to be a necessity for every food producer. The health impact of using synthetic dyes is a reason for us to go back to nature by using natural dyes. Natural dyes can be an alternative dye that is non-toxic, renewable and environmentally friendly. Miana (Coleous scutellarioides (L) Benth) is a tropical plant that grows wild in Indonesia. This plant contains anthocyanins which have potential as natural dyes. This research aims to determine the effect of maceration time on total anthocyanin coloring powder from miana leaves as a source of natural coloring substances using the foam mat drying method. The research began with preparing the ingredients, then macerating 25 grams of miana leaves using 250 mL of distilled water with varying times of 6, 12, 18, 24, 30 and 36 hours. The maceration results are then filtered and centrifuged. In the foam mat drying method, maltodextrin filler is added with a concentration of 8% and egg white foaming agent with a concentration of 5%. Based on the research results, the best conditions were obtained at a maceration time of 36 hours. The analysis results showed that the dye powder yield was 57.643%, the water content was 2.237%, the solubility was 97.711% and the total anthocyanin concentration was 217.09 mg/L. Keywords:Coleous scutellarioides (L) Benth, Natural Dyes, Foam Mat Drying, Maltodextrin, Egg White

Abstract

The availability of biomass waste in the form of palm kernel shells and coconut shells in East Kalimantan is high due to the increase in palm oil and coconut production, but its utilization is still not optimal, so further processing is needed to increase its economic value. One way to utilize this waste is to process it into biopellets as a renewable fuel. The main problem in production biopellets lies in the selection of the type of binder that affects the quality characteristics of the biopellets. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the type of binder on the characteristics of biopellets made from a mixture of palm kernel shells and coconut shells with a ratio of 2:1. The research method included the biopellet production process using the pelletizing method with variations in adhesive types, namely cornstarch, sago flour, glutinous rice flour, tapioca flour, and molasses, with the parameters analyzed including proximate analysis and calorific value. The best results were obtained from biopellets with sago flour adhesive with a moisture content of 9.44%, ash content of 1.65%, volatile matter of 71.32%, fixed carbon of 17.59%, and calorific value of 19.601 MJ/kg.

Abstract

The continuous increase in motor vehicle usage has led to a corresponding rise in lubricant oil consumption, resulting in a greater volume of used lubricating oil waste. Various treatment methods can be applied to process used lubricating oil waste, one of which is pyrolysis to convert the waste into liquid fuel. This study was conducted to determine the effect of activated natural zeolite as a catalyst in the conversion of used lubricating oil into liquid fuel. The used lubricating oil was subjected to pyrolysis for 120 minutes at a temperature of 350°C, using a feed volume of 500 mL. Catalyst weight variations of 0 g, 21.5 g, 43 g, 64.5 g, and 86 g were applied. The catalyst consisted of natural zeolite crushed and sieved to 100 mesh particle size. Prior to use, the zeolite was activated using 3 M HCl. The resulting liquid fuel products were evaluated in terms of yield percentage (%Yield), API gravity (°API), density, viscosity, and GC–MS analysis. The pyrolysis process produced 287 mL, 332 mL, 387 mL, 441 mL, and 415 mL of liquid fuel, respectively. The maximum fuel yield was obtained with a catalyst weight of 64.5 g, producing 441 mL of liquid fuel with a yield of 88.2%, a density of 812.2 kg/m³, a viscosity of 2.48 cSt, and an API gravity of 42.56°. The API gravity value indicates that the liquid fuel product can be classified as kerosene.
