Abstract

The increasing global demand for food amidst increasingly extreme climate change poses significant challenges to the agricultural sector, particularly in arid lands vulnerable to drought.  Unsustainable water use and improper irrigation practices can negatively impact the physical and chemical properties of soil, threatening agricultural productivity and sustainability. This study aims to analyze the influence of various irrigation practices on the physical and chemical properties of soil in dryland agricultural areas. The research methodology includes measuring physical soil properties such as texture, structure, and water holding capacity, as well as chemical soil analysis to determine salinity levels and nutrient availability. This research investigates the impact of irrigation water use on the physical and chemical properties of agricultural land in Village Afia, District Nort Nias, using a qualitative approach. Data was collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with farmers, and analysis of documents related to irrigation practices. The research results indicate a correlation between irrigation patterns and soil conditions. Excessive irrigation water use is associated with increased soil salinity and decreased soil structure, while well-managed irrigation contributes to improved soil fertility. This study highlights the importance of sustainable irrigation management to maintain soil quality and agricultural productivity.

Abstract

This study developed a weighted matrix model to assist organic rice farmers in Desa Afia, Gunungsitoli City, in making more efficient and sustainable decisions. The model integrates key factors such as soil quality, climate, resource availability, and economic aspects.  Analysis results indicate that the model can identify optimal cultivation strategies that enhance crop yields and profitability while considering environmental sustainability. This model integrates various key factors that influence the productivity and sustainability of organic agriculture, including soil quality (pH, organic matter content, texture), climate conditions (rainfall, temperature, sunshine), resource availability (water, organic fertilizer, labor), and economic aspects (rice selling price, production costs). Analysis using this model demonstrates its ability to identify optimal cultivation strategies that can enhance crop yields and farmer profitability while minimizing negative environmental impacts.  These optimal strategies include selecting superior varieties, applying appropriate organic fertilization techniques, efficient water management, and integrated pest management. This research makes a significant contribution to the development of appropriate technology to support sustainable organic agriculture in the region and can be replicated in other areas with similar characteristics.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of red onion slices on the acceleration of corn seed germination (Zea mays L.). Red onions are known to contain natural phytohormones such as auxin and gibberellin, which can stimulate germination. The research was conducted experimentally with two treatments: corn seeds soaked in water from red onion slices and a control group without treatment. The results showed that seeds treated with red onion water germinated faster, had a higher germination rate, and longer seedling length compared to the control. This indicates that red onion has potential as a natural growth stimulant in corn cultivation.
