Abstract

This study examines the role of context-based citizenship literacy in enhancing critical thinking skills among Civic Education (PPKn) students at Universitas Cenderawasih, Papua, Indonesia, addressing the gap between national curriculum and local socio-cultural dynamics. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in depth interviews, focus group discussions, document analysis, and participatory classroom observations involving 20 students, 5 lecturers, and 3 curriculum stakeholders. Results revealed that 38% of students initially demonstrated high level critical thinking, but participatory learning interventions such as debates on Papua’s special autonomy and local resource conflicts increased systemic analysis skills by 40%. The integration of Papuan cultural elements, fostered inclusive participation and contextual problem-solving. The study concludes that locally adapted citizenship education models significantly strengthen critical thinking while bridging national and regional identities. Practical recommendations include collaborative curriculum design with indigenous communities, replication of the model in marginalized regions, and the incorporation of digital storytelling to amplify skills. This research contributes a novel framework for citizenship education in multicultural contexts, emphasizing reconciliation and equity through pedagogy.

Abstract

Teacher Professional Education (PPG) students as prospective educators have an important role in instilling national values in students. However, their understanding of the concept of defending the country still needs to be improved. Therefore, this service activity aims to provide education about defending the country to PPG students of Cenderawasih University in order to build their nationalism and patriotism character. The subjects in this activity are all students of the Cenderawasih University Pre-Service PPG Program. The scheme of community service is by going directly to the students to socialize and provide understanding to PPG students regarding National Defense which is the theme of this community service. There was a significant increase in student understanding after participating in this educational activity. Before being given the material, only 40% of students obtained a score above 70 in the pre-test, while after education, as many as 85% of students achieved this score in the post-test. This increase shows that the methods applied in this activity are effective in increasing students' understanding of defending the country. The national defense education provided to PPG students of Cenderawasih University has been proven to be able to increase their understanding of the importance of nationalism and patriotism. For the next service, it is recommended to have a more interactive approach and a wider range of participants so that the impact is more optimal

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the challenges of environmental volunteerism in Papua within the context of Special Autonomy, deforestation, and climate change. The method used is a qualitative literature study with a systematic review approach to 20 secondary sources (journals, institutional reports, policy documents) from 2015–2023. Thematic analysis identified four main challenges: (1) reliance on unsustainable external funding, (2) resistance from extractive industries supported by policy ambivalence, (3) fragmented coordination due to geographical constraints, and (4) the impact of climate change exacerbating ecological vulnerability. Results show that 72% of volunteer groups in Jayapura depend on short-term project funds, while 65% of mining and plantation permits (2019–2023) ignored community consultations. On the other hand, volunteerism has the potential to become a counter-narrative to development through community-based initiatives that integrate local knowledge and technology. The conclusion emphasizes the need to reorient Special Autonomy policies by strengthening participatory budgeting, legal protection for volunteers, and integrating local wisdom into environmental governance to bridge the gap between development agendas and ecological sustainability.
