Abstract

This study examines the role of context-based citizenship literacy in enhancing critical thinking skills among Civic Education (PPKn) students at Universitas Cenderawasih, Papua, Indonesia, addressing the gap between national curriculum and local socio-cultural dynamics. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in depth interviews, focus group discussions, document analysis, and participatory classroom observations involving 20 students, 5 lecturers, and 3 curriculum stakeholders. Results revealed that 38% of students initially demonstrated high level critical thinking, but participatory learning interventions such as debates on Papua’s special autonomy and local resource conflicts increased systemic analysis skills by 40%. The integration of Papuan cultural elements, fostered inclusive participation and contextual problem-solving. The study concludes that locally adapted citizenship education models significantly strengthen critical thinking while bridging national and regional identities. Practical recommendations include collaborative curriculum design with indigenous communities, replication of the model in marginalized regions, and the incorporation of digital storytelling to amplify skills. This research contributes a novel framework for citizenship education in multicultural contexts, emphasizing reconciliation and equity through pedagogy.

Abstract

Teacher Professional Education (PPG) students as prospective educators have an important role in instilling national values in students. However, their understanding of the concept of defending the country still needs to be improved. Therefore, this service activity aims to provide education about defending the country to PPG students of Cenderawasih University in order to build their nationalism and patriotism character. The subjects in this activity are all students of the Cenderawasih University Pre-Service PPG Program. The scheme of community service is by going directly to the students to socialize and provide understanding to PPG students regarding National Defense which is the theme of this community service. There was a significant increase in student understanding after participating in this educational activity. Before being given the material, only 40% of students obtained a score above 70 in the pre-test, while after education, as many as 85% of students achieved this score in the post-test. This increase shows that the methods applied in this activity are effective in increasing students' understanding of defending the country. The national defense education provided to PPG students of Cenderawasih University has been proven to be able to increase their understanding of the importance of nationalism and patriotism. For the next service, it is recommended to have a more interactive approach and a wider range of participants so that the impact is more optimal

Abstract

Tin mining in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province has long been a strategic economic sector since the colonial era. Despite its significant contribution to the national economy, this activity has led to complex ecological and social impacts, including environmental degradation, pollution, and social conflict. This study aims to analyze tin mining practices through the lens of environmental ethics, highlighting the moral imbalance between human interests and nature. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research draws on a literature review of scholarly articles, media investigations, and theoretical frameworks of environmental ethics—particularly anthropocentrism, biocentrism, and ecocentrism. The findings reveal the dominance of anthropocentric values in mining policies and practices, wherein human interests are prioritized over ecosystem sustainability. Weak governance, the prevalence of illegal mining, and widespread environmental damage point to an ethical crisis in natural resource management. Biocentric and ecocentric approaches are proposed as normative alternatives that recognize the intrinsic value of nature and non-human life forms. This study underscores the urgency of reformulating development paradigms based on ecological justice to achieve more inclusive and ethical sustainability in resource governance in Indonesia

Abstract

The Raja Ampat conservation area in Southwest Papua is facing increasing ecological pressure due to nickel mining activities taking place on small islands such as Gag, Kawei and Manuran. This study aims to analyze the environmental crisis through a literature review approach with a geospatial and environmental ethics perspective. The results show significant changes in land cover between 2015 and 2023, characterized by secondary forest degradation and increased marine sedimentation around the mine site. Spatial data from various sources indicate overlaps between mining business licenses (IUPs) and conservation zones, potentially weakening the ecological function and integrity of conservation areas. In terms of environmental ethics, the practice of resource exploitation in this high ecological value area reflects an anthropocentric approach that ignores the intrinsic value of nature and the rights of local communities to a sustainable living space. This study recommends the need for a moratorium on mining in conservation areas, synchronization of spatial planning policies, strengthening the participation of indigenous peoples, and integrating the principles of ecological justice in environmental decision-making.
