Abstract

Cattle farming in Merauke Regency is still mostly simple, maintained semi-intensively and extensively. Most farmers keep livestock only as savings. Most still depend on nature, especially in the provision of feed, and leave livestock for days in the forest, this will have an impact on the health and productivity of livestock, and this is thought to be one of the causes of the high livestock mortality rate in Merauke Regency by mid-2024. The participation of all parties, including farmers, government and academics, is needed to prevent an increase in mortality due to the outbreak. The exact cause of the massive mortality is not yet known, so educational assistance is required by the community, especially farmers. The method used by the academics, in this case, lecturers and students, is to hold discussions with the farming community in one of the villages that has a large enough cattle population but has not paid attention to maintenance management. The discussion results became a reference for the academic team to develop a socialisation and training programme to solve the problems farmers face. The programme included the distribution of vitamins and dewormers, feed fermentation training, socialisation of manure processing into fertiliser and socialisation of cattle health assessment. The activities were carried out for 6 months, with monitoring and evaluation. The results of this service activity are, that the level of knowledge and understanding of farmers is increasing regarding the need for health care and the application of good management for livestock to increase productivity and reduce the negative impacts that can be caused. Another benefit is the improvement of skills in managing feed ingredients, thus reducing dependence on nature.

Abstract

The majority of the population of Tanah Miring District, Merauke Regency work as farmers and livestock breeders by utilizing agricultural waste as animal feed. The livestock pattern that is managed traditionally and has not been controlled for health, has resulted in a decrease in the productivity of livestock businesses which results in sudden livestock deaths. The implementation method includes two stages, namely socialization and implementation of activities consisting of two activities, namely physical activities and non-physical activities. The results of the community service, namely socialization, were carried out in two places, namely in the local government and at the Merauke Regency Food Security, Animal Husbandry and Animal Health Service, physical activities in the form of cage sanitation and provision of multivitamins and medicines to livestock farmers, while non-physical activities in the form of counseling on the prevention and control of diseases caused by parasites. This activity received a positive response from the community so that it could be carried out well and successfully helped reduce the mosquito population in the cage environment, increase the immunity of livestock from disease attacks and increase the productivity of cattle farming businesses in Merauke Regency.

Abstract

Background: The dusky pademelon (Thylogale brunii) is an endemic marsupial of southern Papua for which morphometric information related to developmental maturity remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate differences in external body measurements and internal organ morphometry of male dusky pademelons across maturity stages (subadult and adult) and to identify practical morphological indicators relevant to conservation and sustainable use.. Methodology: Four male individuals (two subadults and two adults) obtained through traditional hunting in Kampung Wasur, Merauke Regency, were examined. External measurements included body weight, body length, head length, tail length, ear length, limb lengths, and chest circumference. Internal observations comprised pelage colour, dentition characteristics, and the weights of the liver, kidneys, and testes. Differences between maturity stages were assessed using nonparametric statistical analyses. Findings: Chest circumference was the only external parameter showing a significant difference between subadult and adult males (p = 0.0237), indicating greater thoracic development in mature individuals. Other external measurements were not statistically different, although adults consistently showed larger body dimensions. In contrast, internal organ morphometry revealed marked increases in liver, kidney, and testicular weights in adults, reflecting advanced metabolic and reproductive maturity. Age-related changes in dentition and fur coloration further supported maturity differentiation. Given the limited sample size, these findings should be interpreted cautiously. Contributions: This study provides the first integrated morphometric baseline for male T. brunii in southern Papua. Chest circumference and internal organ development emerge as informative indicators of maturity, offering practical value for field-based age classification and community based wildlife management
