Abstract

This research examines the conflict of roles and responsibilities between elders and deacons in pastoral service within the church. Utilizing a qualitative method, particularly in-depth interviews, the study not only evaluates the dynamics of the relationship between both positions but also identifies its impact on the effectiveness of pastoral services. The research findings highlight differences in perception, role conflicts, and discrepancies in responsibilities between the two roles. This conflict manifests through a gap between positive perceptions within the church and less positive interactions outside worship, creating a negative atmosphere detrimental to the participation of the congregation. Root causes of the conflict, such as individual negligence and the desire for personal recognition, are also identified. Its implications are felt in the effectiveness of services, affecting unity and spiritual growth within the congregation. The study emphasizes the importance of collaboration in pastoral services and presents solutions for consideration. The crucial role of church leadership in addressing conflicts and creating an environment supportive of unity is also underscored. In conclusion, this research details the conflict between elders and deacons, emphasizing collaborative solutions to enhance the effectiveness of pastoral services within the church.

Abstract

This article explores the theological perspective on interreligious tolerance in North Sulawesi, focusing on the role of pastors in maintaining the authenticity of biblical values amidst the challenges of religious pluralism. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method, utilizing in-depth interviews and direct observation of pastors from the GPdI (Gereja Pantekosta di Indonesia) denomination. The collected data is analyzed thematically to examine the dynamics of pastors’ roles in safeguarding the integrity of Christian doctrine while adapting to a pluralistic social context. The findings reveal that pastors play a dual role as both citizens of the nation and citizens of heaven. They are required to act as wise social mediators, balancing the demands of interreligious tolerance with their commitment to upholding Christian principles. Love as the foundation of theology is shown to be a key guide in the practice of tolerance, despite the risks of doctrinal compromise if tolerance is excessively applied. Pastors in North Sulawesi function not only as educators but also as role models in social life, demonstrating how Christian faith can coexist harmoniously with other religions without losing its doctrinal integrity. This article provides insights that healthy tolerance requires a deep understanding of theology, inclusive leadership strategies, and efforts to maintain a balance between social harmony and the purity of faith.

Abstract

This paper delves into the complex relationship between theology and modern social change, particularly focusing on the responses of religious traditions, specifically Christianity, to evolving socio-cultural contexts. It begins by examining how technological advancements, demographic shifts, and globalization have reshaped religious practices and societal norms. The impact of these changes on religious institutions is significant, as they navigate the tensions between tradition and innovation. By employing sociological theories of change, such as those proposed by Ogburn and Davis, the paper highlights how institutions are adapting to material and immaterial elements of culture, responding to challenges like urbanization, aging populations, and shifts in family structures. It also explores the role of technology in both facilitating religious engagement and raising concerns over its potential to dilute spiritual experiences. Furthermore, the paper discusses key theological frameworks, including liberation theology and ecological theology, and their efforts to address social justice, inequality, and environmental crises. The role of Christianity in promoting social justice, reconciliation, and environmental stewardship is emphasized as a vital response to modern social challenges. Theological perspectives are positioned as essential for navigating complex issues such as climate change, economic inequality, and migration. The article concludes that theology, particularly social theology, must continue to evolve to provide moral and ethical guidance, helping communities and institutions respond to the pressing challenges of modern society.
