Abstract

This Community Service Program aims to improve the quality of education in Pasar Melintang Village, Lubuk Pakam, North Sumatra, through the establishment of a Learning House. This initiative is designed to provide additional educational access for children and teenagers who face limitations in obtaining quality formal education. The program focuses on enhancing literacy and numeracy skills while providing academic support to help students better understand their school subjects. The methods used include an initial survey to identify educational needs, the implementation of structured learning activities, and the evaluation of the program's impact on student development. The results of the program show a significant improvement in reading and writing skills, as well as in understanding basic numeracy concepts. Additionally, this program contributes to raising community awareness about the importance of education. The presence of the Learning House is expected to have a long-term positive impact, preparing the younger generation in the village to face academic and social challenges in the future. Thus, this program not only provides direct benefits to the students but also creates a positive shift in the collective awareness of the community regarding the importance of education.

Abstract

Student competence in conducting final research projects and supervisor competence in mentoring research are critical aspects that need enhancement. This study aimed to analyze the competence of supervisors and students in the methodology of mathematics education research. The research was part of a broader effort to enhance the quality of mathematics education research outcomes at the higher education level. The research methodology employs descriptive analysis, with respondents comprising supervisors and students engaged in thesis research within mathematics education programs. The findings revealed that supervisors' competence in research methodology remains suboptimal. The highest competence areas include understanding instrument validity and reliability, research hypothesis formulation, and collaborative research skills, with an average achievement rate of 66.7%. Similarly, students' understanding and application of research methodology are also insufficient, with the highest competence observed in differentiating between quantitative and qualitative research at 83.25%. Factors influencing research methodology competence for both supervisors and students were identified. These include a basic understanding of research (34.4%) and, notably, the lowest level of competence in sampling techniques (25.8%). The results highlight the need for further studies aimed at enhancing and refining research methodology competencies in mathematics education.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of Gowe Nilare, a traditional Nias game, as a culturally based learning medium in teaching the concept of circles. The research employed a literature review approach, collecting and analyzing sources related to local culture, mathematical concepts of circles, and experiential learning theory. The findings indicate that Gowe Nilare physically and structurally represents the concept of a circle, both in the formation of players and in the repetitive, cyclical rhythm of movements. The use of this medium not only reinforces students' understanding of circles in a concrete and contextual manner but also enhances engagement and motivation through an instructional approach that integrates local cultural values. Furthermore, Gowe Nilare serves as a tool to strengthen cultural identity and social values such as togetherness and collaboration in the learning process. Thus, Gowe Nilare can be considered an effective and relevant alternative learning medium, while also supporting the preservation of traditional culture within modern educational contexts. This study recommends the broader development and implementation of culturally based learning media to enrich teaching methods in schools.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the geometric values embedded in the baluse, a traditional shield of the Nias people, through an ethnomathematical approach. The primary focus of this research is to identify the flat shapes reflected in the visual structure of the baluse and to analyze its potential as a learning medium for introducing the concept of two-dimensional shapes at the elementary and secondary school levels. This study employs a literature review method by examining various cultural texts, visual documentation, and previous studies relevant to the fields of ethnomathematics and culturally-based mathematics education. The findings reveal that the baluse visually incorporates flat geometric shapes such as ellipses, circles, and vertical symmetry. This structure holds significant potential as a contextual teaching medium that can enhance students’ understanding of geometric concepts through cultural perspectives. Furthermore, the results reinforce the idea that mathematics learning integrated with local wisdom not only increases student engagement but also contributes to cultural preservation. The study recommends the development of instructional media and classroom experiments based on the baluse to evaluate its effectiveness in educational practice.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the integration of the Batak Toba traditional house as a contextual medium in teaching three-dimensional geometric concepts to twelfth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Girsang Sipangan Bolon. A qualitative approach was employed to observe how geometric shapes within the architectural structure of the traditional house—such as prisms, pyramids, and rectangular blocks—can be identified and utilized to enhance students’ understanding of spatial geometry. The results indicate that this culturally based learning approach significantly improves students’ conceptual comprehension, creativity, and learning motivation. Students find it easier to associate geometric forms with real-world structures, positively impacting their academic performance. Moreover, this method reinforces local cultural values and promotes active student engagement in the learning process. Teachers play a crucial role in facilitating the connection between mathematical concepts and cultural context. The study recommends further development of local-culture-based instructional media and teacher training to integrate indigenous knowledge into classroom learning. The integration of cultural elements in mathematics education has proven effective in creating meaningful learning experiences and fostering students' cultural identity.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between the traditional pengeret-ret ornament and the concept of plane figures from an ethnomathematical perspective. The pengeret-ret ornament, a distinctive motif from the cultural heritage of the Indonesian archipelago, was chosen as the object of study due to its rich visual patterns filled with geometric shapes. This research employs a literature study method with a qualitative-descriptive approach. Data sources include scholarly journals, ethnographic articles, and visual references of relevant traditional motifs. The findings indicate that the pengeret-ret ornament contains elements of plane figures such as triangles, squares, parallelograms, rhombuses, and circles. These patterns are arranged symmetrically and repetitively, reflecting geometric concepts such as translation, reflection, and rotation. In addition to their aesthetic and symbolic value, these ornaments also hold great potential as contextual, culturally based media for teaching geometry. Therefore, this research contributes to the development of ethnomathematics teaching materials as well as the preservation of culture through innovative approaches in mathematics education.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the relationship between the traditional musical instrument Faritia from Nias and the concept of the circle in terms of its visual form, rhythmic structure, and social symbolic meaning. Faritia is a metal idiophone shaped like a circle, commonly used in traditional ceremonies such as Mamozi Aramba. The research approach is a literature review, collecting and analyzing various sources on organology theory, Euclidean rhythm, and ethnomusicological studies. The findings indicate that the physical form of Faritia reflects principles of acoustic resonance and symbolic values commonly found in traditional cultures: balance, wholeness, and continuity. The rhythmic patterns produced by Faritia show a tendency towards cyclical beat distribution similar to the concept of Euclidean rhythms. Moreover, in social practice, Faritia is played within circular formations that reinforce collective meaning and community unity. Thus, Faritia functions not only as a traditional musical instrument but also as a multidimensional cultural symbol representing the circle in the physical, musical, and social structures of Nias society.
