Abstract

This study examines the role of textual practice (micro-structure) in shaping humanitarian narratives in news coverage of the Israel-Palestine conflict by CNN US and CNN Indonesia. Employing Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the research identifies key linguistic features, including lexical choices, sentence structure, modality, rhetorical devices, and pronoun usage, that contribute to the ideological framing of news articles. The findings indicate that CNN US employs neutral and euphemistic language, passive constructions, and hedging devices to maintain journalistic objectivity, whereas CNN Indonesia utilizes emotionally charged language, active voice, and definitive claims to frame the conflict with a strong pro-Palestinian stance. These textual differences underscore the influence of language in constructing public perceptions of humanitarian crises.

Abstract

This study examines how emotions are expressed through language in Inside Out (2015) using Saussure’s semiotic theory. The research focuses on how dialogues spoken by Joy, Sadness, Fear, Disgust, and Anger function as signs that represent Riley’s emotional states. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the study analyzes the relationship between signifier (words and phrases used in dialogue) and signified (the intended emotional meaning). The findings indicate that emotions in the film are conveyed through specific verbal expressions, showing how language operates as a system of signs. This research contributes to the field of semiotics by providing insights into how words shape emotional meaning in animated storytelling.

Abstract

In discourse, speech is not only considered as a linguistic phenomenon but also as a means to maintain or change power relations in society. One of the clearest examples of the use of speech in discourse to change social change occurred in The Black Civil Rights Movement from 1955 to 1968 in the United States. Based on the interest in studying Malcolm X's speech further, the thesis writer decided to analyze Malcolm X's speech at the Oxford Union Debate using Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis framework with a qualitative method that will focus on linguistic issues as part of social and humanitarian issues. The results of this study showed deconstruction result of Malcolm X's speech text by analyzing various linguistic features from the dimensions of text practice (including positive and negative lexical items, key terms of ideology and belief, modality, and rhetorical devices), discursive practice (including intertextuality and shared knowledge), and sociocultural (including formality and personal pronouns), then continued with a discussion of the relationship between discourse, power, and ideology and the role of Malcolm X's speech in the historical context at that time. It can be concluded that Malcolm X's speech highlights his advocacy for revolutionary justice and self-defense for oppressed black people. He also challenged the power structures of his time, opposing segregation and exposing the hypocrisy of the American and Western governments with white supremacy and colonialism behind the mask of democracy.

Abstract

This study exemines the ability to use mind mapping in descriptive writing in grade eight junior high school. This study uses quantitative methods by dividing into two groups, namely the experimental group and the control group. The experimental group is taught using mind mapping and the control group taught with the classical method. Data analysis is calculated using the t-test formula. The result showed that mind mapping method is effective in descriptive text writing. It can be proven in the result of the value of t = -4.982 with p-value = 0.000. So, it can be concluded that H₀ is rejected and H₁ is accepted. So, the use of mind mapping method is effective to help students think more creatively in descriptive writing.

Abstract

This study analyzes conversational turn-taking strategies used in the WSJ News interview between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. The aims of this study are to identify the types of turn-taking strategies used in the interview and to explain how these strategies organize the flow of conversation during a tense political interview. This research is based on Conversation Analysis, especially the turn-taking theory proposed by Anna-Brita Stenström (1994), which focuses on how speakers take turns, hold turns, interrupt, overlap, and repair speech in spoken interaction. A descriptive qualitative method is used, and the data are taken from a WSJ News video recording of the Trump–Zelensky interview. The spoken data are analyzed by identifying and classifying turn-taking strategies such as interruption, overlap, self-selection, turn-holding, and repair, and the findings are presented in tables to make the results easier to understand. The results show that several types of turn-taking strategies appear frequently, with interruption and overlap being the most dominant, especially during moments of disagreement and tension. The speakers often take turns competitively, which causes interruptions and overlapping speech, showing that turn-taking rules are not always followed. Overall, the findings indicate that turn-taking strategies play an important role not only in managing speaking turns but also in showing power, disagreement, and control in political media discourse.

Abstract

This study analyzes rhetorical devices used by Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky in their spontaneous verbal exchange published by The Wall Street Journal in 2025. This study aims to identify the types of rhetorical devices used by both political leaders and to explain how these devices function as instruments of power negotiation in high-stakes political communication. This research applies Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis framework, focusing on textual and sociocultural practice dimensions to examine how language constructs power relations and social meaning. This paper used a descriptive qualitative method. The results show that Trump predominantly uses repetition, metaphor, hyperbole, and sarcasm to assert dominance and construct authority. At the same time, Zelensky employs rhetorical questions, rejection of imposed metaphors, emotional appeals, and ethical positioning to resist dominant framing and maintain credibility. Overall, the findings indicate that rhetorical devices play an important role not only as stylistic choices but also as strategic mechanisms for negotiating power and shaping social meaning in spontaneous international political discourse.
