Abstract

Solid soap is a cleansing product derived from the saponification of fatty acids and bases. The fatty acids used were coconut oil and palm oil. Coconut oil and palm oil contained lauric acid, palmitic acid, and oleic acid, each of which functioned to produce lather, hardness, and moisturizing properties in the soap. Coconut milk contained oleic acid, stearate, and linoleate, serving as moisturizers. Coconut milk could be used as a substitute for water to dissolve NaOH. This study aimed to ascertain the physical and chemical quality of solid coconut milk soap with variations in concentrations of coconut oil and palm oil. The study was conducted as an experimental research. Solid coconut milk soap was manufactured using the cold process method. The soap was formulated into three different recipes. The results of physical and chemical quality tests of the three formulations showed water content testing yielded 7.88% (formula 1), 7.95% (formula 2), and 9.63% (formula 3). Foam height testing resulted in 11.6 cm (formula 1), 11.3 cm (formula 2), and 11.3 cm (formula 3). pH testing showed values of 9.63 (formula 1), 9.76 (formula 2), and 9.73 (formula 3). Free alkali testing indicated 0.089% (formula 1), 0.094% (formula 2), and 0.084% (formula 3). The conclusion drawn from this research is that solid coconut milk soap with variations in concentrations of coconut oil and palm oil meets the 2021 Indonesian National Standards for organoleptic properties, water content, pH, and free alkali content.

Abstract

Abstract

Turmeric (Curcuma domestica) contains flavonoids and curcumin, which exhibit antibacterial properties, making it a suitable active ingredient for solid soap production. Solid soap must pass physical, chemical, and antibacterial activity assessments to ensure quality. This study evaluates the physical, chemical, and antibacterial properties of turmeric rhizome water extract-based solid soap against Staphylococcus aureus. The research was conducted experimentally, using turmeric rhizome water extract obtained through the maceration method. Antibacterial activity was assessed using the well diffusion method. The solid soap was formulated through saponification, incorporating thick extract (F1) and liquid extract (F2) of turmeric rhizome as active ingredients. Findings indicate that soap F1 has a solid texture, odourless, brown, and homogeneous, with a foam height of 13.63 cm±0.35, a moisture content of 7.52%±0.37, a pH of 10.03±0.05, a free alkali of 0.094%±0.008, and an inhibition zone diameter of 22.38 mm±0.58, classified as very strong antibacterial. Soap formulated F2 demonstrated comparable characteristics, with an 18.60 mm±0.96 inhibition zone, categorised as strong antibacterial. The soap F1 complies with pharmaceutical standards and effectively inhibits Staphylococcus aureus growth.

Abstract

Turmeric (Curcuma domestica) contains curcumin which can provide antioxidant and antibacterial activity. Curcumin can also be used as a natural brownish yellow dye at alkaline pH, so it can be used as an additional ingredient in making solid soap. This research aims to determine the physical quality a chemical quality of solid soap preparations with varying concentrations of turmeric extract. This research includes descriptive research which includes making turmeric extract, making solid soap with varying concentrations of turmeric extract concentration of 2 gram (F1), 3 gram (F2) and 4 grams (F3) as well as physical quality testing which includes organoleptic, water content, foam stability and chemical quality testing include pH, fee alkali and free fatty acids. The results of the physical quality test of the 3 soaps formulation were brown soap, solid and odourless. Water content for F1: 0,6486%, F2: 0,4897%, F3: 0,5228%. Foam stability for F1: 5,5 cm, F2: 5,3 cm, F3: 5,3 cm. The chemical quality test result for pH are F1: 8,54, F2: 8,81, F3: 8,94 while free alkali for F1: 0,0428%, F2: 0,0429% dan F3: 0,0461%. Based on the research that has been carried out, it can be conclude that the three solid soap formulas with varying concentrations of turmeric extract have content, foam stability, pH and free alkali in accordance with SNI-3532-2016.
