Abstract

This research aims to describe the reading comprehension ability of Class VIII Students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. The focus of this research is to measure the extent to which students can understand the intrinsic elements of short stories such as theme, characters, setting, plot and moral messages contained in the text. The research method used is descriptive qualitative, with data collection through reading students' understanding and giving written tests. The research results show that the majority of students are in the capable category in terms of reading with a percentage of 75%, while students who are in the underprivileged category have a percentage of 25%. Factors that influence reading comprehension abilities include interest in reading, availability of appropriate reading materials, and the teaching methods applied by the teacher. Based on these findings, it is recommended that teachers further optimize learning strategies that are interactive and fun, as well as providing reading materials that are relevant to students' interests. It is hoped that the results of this research can be a reference in improving students' reading comprehension skills at SMP Negeri 10 Kupang

Abstract

The focus of this study is “the ability to write descriptive text of grade VII students of SMPN 20 Kupang”. The theory used is the theory of writing, because what is measured in this study is the ability of students to write descriptive text with the ability of students to observe an object. The method used in this study is qualitative descriptive. In this study, the researcher chose material about descriptive text by developing KD 4.2 presenting data, ideas, impressions in the form of descriptive text about objects (schools, tourist attractions, historical places, and/or regional arts performance atmosphere) in writing and orally by paying attention to the structure both orally and in writing. Descriptive text requires students to describe in detail an object or situation, which helps assess their ability in using vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to convey information correctly. Based on the results of the analysis conducted on 25 students of class VII-A SMPN 20 Kupang, the ability to write descriptive text by paying attention to the structure of the descriptive text can be said to be successful because, there were 17 students who completed with a percentage of 68% and 8 students did not complete with a percentage of 32%.

Abstract

This study aims to improve the ability to read comprehension of descriptive texts of class VII A students by applying the SQ3R Methode (Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Reviuw). The type of research used is classroom action research with the following stages, planning, implementation, observation, testing and reflection by taking the research location at SMPK Santa Maria Assumpta Kupang. The subjects in this study were 28 class VII A students. Data collection was carried out using observation and test techniques. The date were processed and analiyzed further using quantitative descriptive. The Result of this study indicate that the application of the SQ3R Methode can improve the ablility to read comprehension of descriptive texts of students where in cycle I the completeness obtained was 43% or 12% students who achieved completeness while those those who had not achieved the completeness criteria werw 57% with a total of 16 students. In addition, there was an increase in the average value of student test results from 65 in cycle II to 81 in cycle II. Thus, the application of the SQ3R Methode (Survey, Question, Read, Recite and Reviuw), has been proven to impove the reading comprehension ablitiy of descriptive texts of class VII A students. This is proven by the increasing student learning outcomes from cycle I to cycle II after the teacher applied the SQ3R Methode.
