Abstract

This study explores the Bajapuik tradition in Minangkabau weddings, focusing on its embedded religious and social values. Specifically, it examines how this tradition fosters inter-family bonds while adapting to the pressures of modernization, including changes in social structure, gender roles, and economic challenges. Using a descriptive qualitative method and historical approach, data were collected through interviews with traditional leaders and cultural observers, as well as direct observation of marriage ceremonies in Pariaman. Findings show that Bajapuik is more than just a ceremonial custom; it reflects core Minangkabau values, including cooperation, family honour, justice, and spirituality. As part of a matrilineal society, the bride’s family offers symbolic respect to the groom’s family, an inversion of most bridewealth practices globally. Although the form and amount of Bajapuik have changed due to external influences and economic conditions, its cultural essence remains strong. Comparatively, Bajapuik shares social functions with mas kawin in Islamic tradition, dowry in South Asia, and bride price in African societies. Despite differences in direction and symbolism, these practices serve to affirm kinship ties, reinforce social status, and embody shared cultural values.

Abstract

In 1908, the Dutch colonial government forced the Bima Sultanate to sign a Longe Contract agreement. The Bima people did not accept the agreement because it meant the pride of the Bima sultanate. This research aims to analyze the background of the Bima people's resistance, the process of the event, and the impact of the Bima people's resistance to the Dutch. This research uses historical research methods with political, socio-cultural, and religious approaches. Data analysis uses four stages: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The results showed that the resistance of the Bima people was caused by the lengthy contract that was detrimental to the Bima sultanate and demeaned the sultanate's dignity. The people of Bima, who are known for their strong Islamic understanding, did not want to submit to the Dutch colonial system. The resistance of the people of Bima occurred in three villages, namely Ngali, Dena, and Kala. Resistance efforts were able to be paralyzed by the Dutch, who had modern war weapons, and ended with the Dutch victory. The impact of the resistance resulted in the Tureli Council being replaced with the Royal Governing Council, the Hadat (adat) Council was narrowed, only taking care of Hadat (adat) affairs in the palace and its function as the Bima Sultanate Judicial Body, Islamic Law was replaced with Dutch Colonial Law.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Madukismo Sugar Factory in the period (1955–1958) in post-war industrial and social reconstruction in Yogyakarta. Using historical methods that include interviews, archival studies, and field observations, this study highlights how Madukismo played a strategic role in absorbing labor and reviving the industrial sector that was affected by the economic crisis during the malaise. The establishment of this factory was an initiative of Sultan Hamengkubuwono IX in response to the high unemployment rate due to the closure of a number of sugar factories since the previous government. From the results of the research, it can be seen that Madukismo is not only a symbol of local economic recovery, but also contributes to shaping new post-colonial social dynamics. Until now, the Madukismo Sugar Factory remains the only sugar factory still operating in the Yogyakarta area.
