Abstract

Language is a crucial tool in scientific communication, particularly in biology, where precise terminology is essential. While Latin scientific names provide standardization, integrating local languages can enhance students' comprehension and engagement. This study examines the impact of using local languages in biological scientific terms among Biology Department students at Medan State University. A qualitative research approach was applied, using online questionnaires and the Guttman scale for data analysis. The results show that 69.93% of students have a positive perception of local language use in biology learning. Most students believe it improves understanding, preserves cultural heritage, and increases motivation. However, challenges arise when local terms do not align with standardized scientific names, leading to misunderstandings. Some students also find it difficult to translate scientific terms into their local language. Despite these challenges, integrating local language fosters cultural appreciation and active learning. A balanced approach combining local and scientific terms is necessary to ensure clarity and accuracy in biology education.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of karamunting leaf extract (Melastoma malabathricum L.) against bacteria isolated from eggshells. Eggshells are known as one of the primary contamination sources for foodborne bacteria, which can pose potential health risks to consumers. The ethanolic extract of karamunting leaves was tested using the disk diffusion method with amoxicillin as the positive control and 96% ethanol as the negative control. The inhibition zones were measured after 24 hours of incubation at 37°C. The results showed that karamunting leaf extract produced an inhibition zone of 3.35 mm, categorized as weak antibacterial activity. In contrast, the positive control, amoxicillin, generated a much larger inhibition zone of 22.89 mm, while the negative control showed no inhibition. The antibacterial effect of the extract is believed to result from the presence of bioactive secondary metabolites, including flavonoids, tannins, saponins, steroids, and phenolic compounds, which function by disrupting bacterial cell walls, altering membrane permeability, denaturing proteins, and inhibiting enzyme activity. Although the antibacterial potential of karamunting leaf extract is lower than that of synthetic antibiotics, it still demonstrates promising potential as a natural antibacterial agent that is safer and more environmentally friendly. Further studies are recommended to assess the activity at different extract concentrations and solvent fractions to achieve more optimal antibacterial effects.

Abstract

This study looks at how red betel (Piper crocatum) extract can help keep women's reproductive health in good condition using natural methods. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach, mainly by looking at existing scientific articles and data from journals and databases between 2015 and 2025. The focus was on finding out which active ingredients are in red betel, how they fight bacteria, and why they might be useful in preventing infections in the female reproductive system. The research shows that red betel has compounds like flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, and phenolics that work together to stop harmful bacteria from growing, especially Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These compounds fight bacteria in several ways, such as breaking down the bacterial cell walls, stopping important enzymes from working, and messing up the bacteria's energy processes. Studies also show that using red betel in the form of a decoction can help reduce symptoms like vaginal discharge while keeping the good bacteria in the vagina balanced. Compared to man-made antiseptics, red betel has similar antibacterial effects but causes less irritation and is less likely to lead to bacteria becoming resistant. This makes it a promising option for a safe and eco-friendly natural alternative in feminine hygiene and women's health care. More research is needed to find the best way to extract these compounds and to test their effectiveness through proper clinical studies.
