Abstract

This study discusses the history of the establishment and operational dynamics of Vereenigde Javasche Houthandel Maatschappij (Vejahoma), a timber company located in Semarang from 1917 to 1942. The increasing demand for processed wood was a factor in the formation of this company. The main branch office was in Semarang, as a trading center and its proximity to teak-producing areas, such as Blora and Rembang. This study uses historical methods, which include heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography by utilizing primary sources such as colonial newspapers namely De Locomotief, De Koerier, and company documents from the ZBW Leibniz Informationszentrum Wirtschaft and Delpher. The results of the study show that Vejahoma underwent a transformation from a mere distributor of raw wood to a timber industry company producing various processed wood. The company implemented an adaptive marketing strategies, participated in exhibitions, and was active in colonial socio-economic organizations. Despite fluctuations, Vejahoma managed to survive through contracts with the government and product diversification. This research reveals the important role of Vejahoma in the global timber trade network during the colonial period.

Abstract

This study examined the popularization of Semarang lumpia outside the Chinese community during the period 1963-1968 by placing it within the socio-political context of the New Order. In the context of Semarang lumpia, it explains how this culinary dish, originating from Peranakan Chinese cuisine, was accepted across ethnic groups and became a symbol of the city's identity. This study used a qualitative method with a historical approach, encompassing heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results show that during the New Order era, the Chinese community's freedom of movement was restricted, but they still had their economic freedom to continue their business. Since the 1970s, the popularization of Semarang lumpia has gradually increased, involving production adaptations, expanded distribution, and the normalization of consumption in public spaces. Within the context of restrictions on Chinese cultural expression, lumpia remained relatively safe because they did not display specific identity symbols. Until the 1980s, the popularization of lumpia increased further following a shift in the narrative from ethnic cuisine to Semarang's signature cuisine.

Abstract

Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) in Semarang City was introduced to the public in 2009. At the beginning of its operation, this bus received sharp criticism regarding chaos and system unpreparedness. However, after various improvements were made, BRT transformed into a new face of public transportation and a solution to the traffic congestion problems faced by Semarang City. This study uses a historical method supported by primary sources obtained from newspapers. The results reveal that the presence of BRT, followed by the emergence of online transportation, has successfully shifted the face of public transportation, which was previously dominated by city transportation (angkot) and city buses. In addition, the transition in public transportation has impacted the lives of workers in the transportation sector who face the challenges of modernization and technological revolution.

Abstract

This study examines how the political images of the presidential and vice-presidential candidates were shaped during the first round of the 2004 presidential election, as reflected in the coverage of the Suara Merdeka newspaper in Semarang City. The 2004 election marked an important stage in the development of Indonesian democracy, as it was the first time the president and vice-president were chosen directly by the public. As a result, newspapers became a key tool for political communication. The main source of information for this study is the Suara Merdeka newspaper during the 2004 election campaign, supported by references from books and academic articles. The research reveals that Suara Merdeka did more than just report news—it actively influenced the public perception of the candidates by selecting specific issues, determining how often they were covered, and highlighting certain symbols. Therefore, newspapers played an important role in shaping how the public understood the political competition during this period of democratic change.
