Abstract

The present research was aimed at describing the dichotomous attitude of Muslim medieval ulama toward the development of religious and non-religious sciences. Based on a library study on the thought of Imam al-Ghazali in his Ihya’ ‘ulum al-din, as well as the thought of al-Zarnuji in his Ta’lim almuta’allim, it was found that both ulama did not stcrikly differentiate the two sciences. Al-Ghazali saw the relation of the two sciences not in “conflict” but “independent” one each other, while al-Zarnuji devided the sciences based on their possitive aspects for Muslims’ religious life. Al-Zarnuji did not classify sciences as religious and non-religious.Kata Kunci: Dikotomi, Pemikiran Al-Ghazali, Al-Zarnuji

Abstract

Viewing educator as a "profession" means considering not only the compliance of elements and scientific procedures but also the fulfillment of salaries for professional staff. Payroll practices of educators had been institutionalized in medieval Islamic educational system, although the institutionalization process had invited controversy among scholars. Along with the institutionalization of the payroll practices of educators, educational theories evolved toward a discussion of issues of the competences of educators who make teaching activities as a "profession". The historical experience of Muslims can give us a lesson for resolving the problems of professionalism of educators today.Kata kunci: Teori, Gaji, Pendidik

Abstract

It is a fact that medieval Moslem scholars did really contribute to the development and preservation of human knowledge. A great deal of Greek and Persian knowledge is preserved through a creative process known as translation. Historically, the translation of the most important texts form Greek and Persia into Arabic was carried out within the Abbasid court. Great libraries and schools thrived on the works that the translators contributed. However, translation of Greek books into Arabic had begun earlier under the Umayyad times late in the seventh century. During the Umayyad, translation became one of the prominent causes behind strengthening the new Islamic state. It was also the main reason that Arabic became the lingua franca for many centuries.

Abstract

Systematic studies on Arabic language had taken place since the early classical age of Islam. Therefore, Arabic language and all its aspects became the first science developed by Moslem scholars. However, the scholars always sought to subordinate the study of Arabic philology and grammar and to limit the influence of grammarians over young men.  And it is a fact that the scholars differed in viewing whether the Arabic is the subordinate to religious sciences or to foreign sciences. From the different argument put forward by the scholars, it is clear that their debates were closely related to the dichotomy of sciences that developed since the third/ ninth century.

Abstract

The studies of Arabic language had taken place since the early classical age of Islam. The studies were influenced much by the interests of Moslems in understanding and articulating the message of the Qur’an and hadith. Historically, for many centuries the Arabic language had an important role in uniting the different ethnic groups, nations, and even religions under one Islamic empire. However, while the conversions of the subdued inhabitants to Islam required a longer period, the acceptance of Arabic as the common language took even longer, and still some groups clung to their native language. Besides, the ulama always sought to subordinate the study of Arabic grammar to the Islamic religious sciences and to limit to influence of grammarians over young men. They feared that grammar which relied on Greek logic as a methodology could lead to fascination with other Greek intellectual sciences.

Abstract

The rapid transformation of Indonesia's national curriculum from content-based to competency-based frameworks reflects broader global educational trends aimed at fostering interdisciplinary skills and adaptability. However, this transition presents unique challenges for pesantren-based madrasahs, traditional Islamic educational institutions that balance religious education with national academic standards. This study addresses the gap in research on how madrasahs respond to national curriculum changes, focusing on the implementation and challenges faced by Madrasah Tsanawiyah and Madrasah Aliyah Pondok Pesantren Al-Mawaddah in Ponorogo. Adopting a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. Key informants were purposively selected. They included religious leaders (kyai), teachers, alums, and students. Data analysis followed an interactive model consisting of three stages: data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings reveal that while madrasahs implement the national curriculum incrementally, aligning it with traditional Islamic education, they face significant challenges, including increased learning loads, overlapping materials, limited teaching hours, and the dual burden of meeting both national and pesantren-specific evaluation standards. These challenges highlight the tension between maintaining traditional values and adapting to modern educational demands. The study underscores the importance of collaborative policymaking in developing flexible curriculum frameworks and targeted teacher training programs, enabling educators to navigate these complexities. By fostering a process-oriented curriculum that integrates Islamic and general education, pesantren-based madrasahs can better equip graduates with modern competencies while preserving their unique cultural and spiritual identity

Abstract

This study explores the philosophy of Ta’dib as the foundational framework for the Islamic education system, emphasizing moral and character development alongside intellectual growth. This research employed a literature review method by analyzing classical and contemporary sources to explore key Islamic educational concepts' meanings, implications, and differences, including tarbiyah, ta’lim, and Ta’dib. Through a comprehensive examination of relevant books, journal articles, and scholarly works, the study identified Ta’dib as a holistic concept emphasizing moral and character development in Islamic education. The findings reveal that Ta’dib extends beyond formal education by cultivating individuals with noble morals, ethical conduct, and a deep understanding of Islamic values. Unlike tarbiyah and ta’lim, which focus on knowledge transfer and spiritual development, Ta’dib serves as a comprehensive moral compass for shaping character and guiding behavior. The study highlights the relevance of Ta’dib in addressing contemporary educational challenges, particularly in nurturing ethical leadership and fostering community cohesion. Quranic schools embody Ta’dib-based education and are exemplary models of integrating character formation with Islamic teachings. This research concludes that the philosophy of Ta’dib provides a sustainable and effective framework for Islamic education. It recommends that educational institutions adopt Ta’dib-centered curricula to address students' moral, spiritual, and intellectual needs, ensuring they become responsible individuals who embody Islamic principles daily.

Abstract

Since Islamic boarding school-based madrasas maintain books as a source of history learning, teachers face serious challenges, form students' critical and chronological thinking skills through book study. This encourages a transformation of history learning, which has been taking place traditionally. This study aims to explore and describe book-based history teaching and learning to improve student competence. This research is qualitative, using a case study type. Data collection techniques use interviews, observation and documentation. Data is analyzed using relevant theories or previous research findings. Data validity is carried out by extending observations. This study found that book-based history learning was transformed by formulating personal-social goals without ignoring transformative goals, emphasizing a chronological approach in education, and developing CRI (Constructed Response Items) model evaluation questions. Book-based learning activities are different from using modern textbooks. Teachers' creative and innovative efforts are needed to realise learning objectives in madrasas through book learning. Apart from mastering the content, the national curriculum is also directed at developing critical, creative, communicative, collaborative and literacy skills.

Abstract

Assistance for spiritual and religious strengthening is an important effort for every human being/individual, especially for those who are inmates in correctional institutions. This mentoring activity aims at moderation values which are expected to have a positive impact on the rehabilitation process of the assisted residents. The aim of this activity is to build awareness and be able to implement the values of moderation in the Trenggalek. Detention center environment. The aim of this service activity is to find out how the understanding and tolerance of the inmates is based on the value of moderation and to find out how the values of moderation are implemented. The implementation method in this servise program uses a research model based on Participatory Action Research (PAR). This method tries to realize three benchmarks, namely the exixtence of a shared commitment with the community and the existence of new institutions in the community that are built based on needs. During the training, various methods are used to ensure active participation and involvement of all participants. The FGD session was held by inviting speakers from several different backgrounds. Group discussions, simulations and role-playing are implemented to help inmates understand the perspectives of othes religions and build empathy. These activities aim to facilitate constructive dialogue and reduce interreligious stereotypes or prejudice. This training was designed with a socio-religious approach to the diversity of religions and beliefs among the inmates. The result of this service is a significant increase in understanding of the values of religious moderation among the inmates.
