Abstract

Internet memes have become a prominent form of popular communication within contemporary digital culture, particularly in social media environments that facilitate rapid content circulation and participatory interaction. As cultural artifacts, memes function not only as entertainment but also as carriers of social meaning that reflect collective identities and engage in broader ideological and political discourses; however, despite growing academic interest, comprehensive mappings of research trends in this field remain limited. This study examines global research trends on memes as popular culture in social media through a bibliometric analysis of publications from 2015 to 2025, employing a quantitative descriptive approach based on a Systematic Literature Review guided by the PRISMA 2020 framework. A total of 100 Scopus-indexed publications were selected using the keywords “meme” and “popular culture,” with bibliographic data analyzed using the Bibliometrix R-tool to identify publication trends, dominant themes, influential sources, institutional contributions, and geographical citation patterns. The findings reveal rapid growth in meme-related scholarship, with an annual growth rate of 25.25% and an average document age of 4.19 years, indicating the highly contemporary nature of this research field, while thematic analysis highlights strong associations with popular culture, social media, humor, and digital culture, alongside increasing attention to platform-specific communities such as Reddit. Citation analysis further demonstrates the dominance of Western countries, particularly the United States, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, in shaping theoretical developments. Overall, this study confirms that meme research has evolved into an important multidisciplinary field within communication and cultural studies, providing a systematic overview of existing scholarship and a foundation for future research on memes as influential elements of digital culture.

Abstract

Research on communication in sociology and religion shows increasingly significant developments alongside the dynamics of global social, cultural, and technological changes. Religion is no longer understood solely as an individual spiritual practice, but as a social phenomenon mediated thru communication processes in various contexts of community life. This study aims to map the trends, scientific structure, and development of research themes related to the communication of sociology and religion during the period 2005–2025 thru a bibliometric approach. Data were obtained from the Scopus database using keywords relevant to communication, sociology, and religion, and then analysed using the R-based Biblioshiny software (bibliometrix). The analysis includes annual publication productivity, major source journals, the most influential authors and institutional affiliations, the geographical distribution of research, citation patterns, and thematic mapping thru keyword co-occurrence analysis. The research findings indicate that the number of publications has shown an increasing trend over the past two decades, with contributions primarily from developed countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom, although developing countries like Indonesia are beginning to play an increasingly significant role. The research themes are dominated by the keywords religion, sociology, and interpersonal communication, with strong connections to issues of identity, health, social justice, and culture. Interdisciplinary approaches and qualitative methodologies appear to dominate studies in this field. Overall, this research confirms that communication in sociology and religion is a relevant and continuously evolving field of study, with great potential for development thru international collaboration, more diverse methodological approaches, and the exploration of contemporary issues in the digital age.

This research employs a qualitative method with a virtual ethnography approach and cyber media analysis covering the levels of media space, media archive, media object, and experiental stories. Computer-Mediated Communication is understood as a technology mediated process in which interactions go beyond message exchange to shape identities and relationships among community members. The findings show that Instagram features create an open participatory space that enables the formation of collective identity through visual elements, emojis, hashtags, music, and language, while also encouraging engagement that bridges online and offline contexts.
