Abstract

Pneumonia is an infectious disease or acute inflammation of the lung parenchyma, mainly caused by the bacteria Streptococcus pneumoniae. The use of antibiotics is the main therapy in the treatment of pneumonia, antibiotics used can inhibit the growth or kill the bacteria that cause infection. Irational use of antibiotics can cause treatment to be less effective, decreased drug safety, increased levels of resistance and increased treatment costs. The aim of this research is to examine the rationality of using antibiotics in pneumonia patients in the pulmonary inpatient installation of M. Zein Painan Hospital for the period January-December 2020. This type of research is non-experimental research, using descriptive methods and retrospective data collection, as well as data collection purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using reference sources in the form of Drug Pharmacotherapy Hand Book 11th Edition and Guidelines for Diagnosis & Management of Community Pneumonia in 2014. The results of this study were that there were 118 patients who were diagnosed with pneumonia in the pulmonary inpatient installation at M. Zein Painan Regional Hospital, and only 48 patients met the requirements. inclusion criteria.   The results of the rational analysis of antibiotic use showed that of the 48 pneumonia patients, the indication was correct as much as (100%), the patient was correct as much as (100%), the drug was correct as much as (95.84%), the dose was correct as much as (96.08%) and the duration was correct. giving as much as (92.16%). The conclusion is that there is still irrational use of antibiotics in the pulmonary inpatient installation at M. Zein Painan Regional Hospital.

Abstract

Elephantopus mollis is a common weed found in West Sumatra, known for its diverse traditional uses and rich phytochemical content. This study aimed to isolate phenolic compounds and evaluate the antioxidant activity of the polar extract of E. mollis herb. The polar extract was obtained through successive extraction using solvents of increasing polarity. Separation of the polar extract was carried out using Amberlite XAD-4 resin chromatography with methanol and water eluents, followed by isolation through silica gel column chromatography using a step-gradient polarity elution system. The separation and isolation processes were monitored by thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Total phenolic content was determined by the Folin–Ciocalteu method, while antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. Structural identification of the isolated compound was performed using UV-Vis, IR, NMR, and LC-MS spectroscopic techniques. Subfraction D of the polar extract exhibited a high phenolic content of 618.06 ± 3.38 mg GAE /g. From subfraction D, a phenolic compound designated D3a was isolated as a yellowish-white powder (95.30 mg) with an Rf value of 0.64, producing a dark blue color upon reaction with 10% FeCl₃. The antioxidant activity of compound D3a was classified as very strong, with an IC₅₀ value of 12.42 ppm. Based on physicochemical characterization, compound D3a was identified as caffeic acid with a molecular formula of C₉H₈O₄ and a molecular weight of 180.049.

Abstract

Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO) has been shown to have significant therapeutic benefits for skin wound healing, primarily due to its anti-inflammatory effects, ability to stimulate tissue regeneration, and potent antioxidant properties. This review analyzes the available research exploring the relationship between VCO and its impact on wound healing. A comprehensive search was conducted using the Medline database via PubMed and Scopus to identify relevant studies published between 1970 and March 2023. The main inclusion criteria were original articles written in English that evaluated wound healing in in vivo skin models using topically applied VCO. The search initially yielded 689 articles, but only 4 articles met these criteria. These studies addressed various types of wounds, including excisional, burn, and diabetic wounds. All four studies demonstrated positive outcomes, showing that VCO promotes skin wound healing. The oil’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibacterial properties were identified as key contributors to its role in enhancing the wound healing process.
