Abstract

Thyroid cancer treatment can cause side effects that have a significant impact on the patient's quality of life and health, so effective interventions are needed to address these impacts. This study aimed to explore various interventions, their impact on the quality of life of thyroid cancer patients. This study used a scoping review approach with PRISMA-ScR for article selection. Articles were obtained from Scopus, PubMed, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest databases published between 2016 and 2024 using keywords related to thyroid cancer, quality of life, intervention and therapy. Of the initial 2043 articles, 9 articles met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The extracted data was analyzed using qualitative methods with identified were author, year of publication, research design, country, type of intervention, duration of intervention, research results, and JBI. The results of the analysis revealed three types of interventions in improving the quality of life of patients with thyroid cancer: (1) Psychological with mindfulness therapy, memory therapy, psychological nursing intervention, behavioral intervention, and technology-based therapy (mHealth); and (2) Physical with Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR), and home-based physical exercise (aerobics, resistance, flexibility). These findings underscore the benefits of interventions to improve the quality of life of thyroid cancer patients which include physical, psychological, and technology-based approaches.

Abstract

Individuals undergoing ostomy surgery frequently encounter various physical, emotional, and social challenges that may adversely affect their quality of life. Continuous Nursing Care (CNC) has been recognized for its potential in strengthening self-care skills and decreasing the incidence of postoperative complications. This review seeks to evaluate the influence of CNC on enhancing life quality and addressing complications among individuals with an ostomy. Objective to determine the effectiveness of Continuous Nursing Care (CNC) in improving quality of life and managing complications among patients undergoing ostomy surgery. This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. A comprehensive literature search was performed for studies published between 2019 and 2023, utilizing Boolean operators and MeSH terms: ("nursing" OR "nurse" OR "care") AND ("ostomy" OR "stoma") AND ("continuous") AND ("management") AND ("quality of life") AND "complication", across five electronic databases: Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and ProQuest. The initial search yielded 968 articles. After removing 28 duplicates, 940 articles remained for title and abstract screening. A total of 151 full-text articles were assessed for eligibility, and 13 studies met the inclusion criteria for the final synthesis. The included studies comprised randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-experimental designs evaluating Continuous Nursing Care (CNC) interventions among ostomy patients, with outcome measures including quality of life, self-care ability, psychological well-being, and complication management. Methodological quality was appraised using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal tools for both RCTs and quasi-experimental studies. Only studies scoring above 65% were included in the final analysis. Thirteen studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. CNC interventions including structured education, telehealth services, home-based care, and psychosocial support were shown to enhance quality of life, improve self-care abilities, and reduce complications after surgery. Furthermore, CNC demonstrated effectiveness in decreasing peristomal infections, psychological distress (e.g., anxiety and depression), and in promoting self-efficacy and emotional adjustment in ostomy patients. Continuous Nursing Care (CNC) has been identified as a promising strategy to enhance quality of life, psychological health, and self-care capacity, while also reducing the risk of complications in individuals with an ostomy. Nonetheless, the variability in intervention models highlights the necessity for additional research utilizing theory-based frameworks, larger sample sizes, and meta-analytic methods to determine the most effective care approaches.

Abstract

Superficial burns often cause acute pain that interferes with patient comfort. One of the non-pharmacological methods used to reduce pain is cold compresses, but scientific evidence regarding their effectiveness is still mixed. To evaluate the effectiveness of cold compresses in reducing pain in patients with superficial burns. This systematic review was conducted by searching articles from the Scopus, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases using the keywords: "cold compress", "burn injury", "pain management", "superficial burns", "RCT". The inclusion criteria were RCT articles published between 2015–2024, in English, and discussing the effects of cold compresses on pain in superficial burns. Selection was carried out through the PRISMA process. Of the 1,025 articles found, 14 articles met the inclusion criteria. Each article underwent title and abstract screening, followed by full-text assessment for eligibility. Methodological quality was then appraised using the JBI Critical Appraisal Tool, and only studies with moderate to high quality were included in the synthesis to ensure robust and reliable findings. The majority of studies showed that cold compresses significantly reduced the intensity of acute pain in the early phase of superficial burns (p < 0.05). This effect was reported to be effective especially in the first 24 hours after injury, with minimal side effects. Cold compress is an effective, safe, and easy-to-do nonpharmacological intervention to reduce pain in superficial burn patients. This intervention deserves to be part of standard care in emergency departments and primary health care.

Abstract

Orthopedic surgery aims to treat musculoskeletal disorders; however, postoperative recovery often presents functional limitations. Digital interventions and telerehabilitation are increasingly being applied in nursing, although evidence of their effectiveness remains limited. This systematic review evaluated the effectiveness of these technologies in supporting postoperative orthopedic recovery and identified their contributions to evidence-based nursing practice. A systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines was conducted using Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science, ScienceDirect, and SAGE databases. Randomized controlled trials and quasi-experimental studies published between 2015 and 2025 involving adult postoperative orthopedic patients were included. The interventions were compared with conventional rehabilitation. Six outcome domains were evaluated: physical function, quality of life, pain, psychosocial aspects, self-efficacy, patient compliance and satisfaction. A total of 1,508 articles were identified, of which 16 studies met the inclusion criteria. Digital-based interventions and telerehabilitation consistently improved physical function (e.g., Timed Up and Go, Functional Independence Measure), increased quality of life (EQ-5D, SF-36), and reduced postoperative pain more rapidly than conventional rehabilitation did. Improvements were also observed in anxiety, depression, self-efficacy, health literacy, patient satisfaction, and adherence to the rehabilitation program. Digital and telerehabilitation interventions effectively support orthopedic postoperative recovery, positively affecting physical, psychosocial, and behavioral outcomes. A multimodal model integrating education, exercise, occupational therapy, and psychosocial support based on self-efficacy and biopsychosocial approaches yielded optimal results. Integration into surgical nursing practice is recommended, with attention to technological infrastructure and clinician training.

Abstract

Hypertension is a major noncommunicable disease that requires effective nonpharmacological interventions, where its management depends not only on pharmacological therapy but also on regular physical exercise. The combination of hypertension exercises, brisk walking, and handgrip exercises has the potential to lower blood pressure through increased cardiorespiratory capacity and vascular vasodilation. This literature review aims to analyze the effectiveness of these interventions, both individually and in combination, and to develop evidence-based recommendations for the management of hypertension. This literature review was conducted to analyze the effectiveness of physical exercise interventions, namely hypertension exercises, brisk walking, and handgrip exercises, on blood pressure reduction and to develop evidence-based recommendations for hypertension management. The study was conducted systematically following the PRISMA guidelines, with articles searched in four electronic databases (PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar) for the period 2020–2025 using keywords related to hypertension, hypertension exercises, brisk walking, handgrip exercises, and randomized controlled trials. Of the 520 articles found, 35 studies met the inclusion criteria (experimental, quasi-experimental, RCT) and were reviewed narratively by category based on exercise type, duration, intensity, and blood pressure outcome. The results of the study were reviewed using a narrative analysis method, which included a thematic synthesis of findings or main categorization based on study variables, referring to PICOS to ensure that the review was targeted at the research objectives. The results of the review show that hypertension exercise, brisk walking, and handgrip exercise interventions, either alone or in combination, are effective in lowering blood pressure with varying durations and intensities depending on the population. The main categories include: 1) Effectiveness of Combination vs. Single: Combined exercises (such as brisk walking and handgrip) are more effective at lowering blood pressure and improving fitness than single exercises. 2) Biological Mechanisms: Blood pressure reduction occurs through improved endothelial function, vasodilation, and sympathetic-parasympathetic nervous system regulation as a result of regular physical exercise. 3) Adherence & Structured Programs: Adherence increases with combination programs and education, resulting in more optimal BP reduction in patients who are consistent and educated. 4) Psychosocial Impact: Combination physical exercise improves quality of life, reduces depression and anxiety, and brings psychosocial benefits to hypertensive patients. Hypertension exercises, brisk walking, and handgrip exercises are effective nonpharmacological interventions for lowering blood pressure in patients with hypertension, with the combination providing more optimal synergistic benefits for long-term compliance.
