Abstract

Stunting remains a significant national challenge in Indonesia, with a prevalence rate of 21.5% in 2023, where high food costs and the mismanagement of household assets such as underutilized small yards contribute to the vulnerability of toddler nutrition in rural areas like Adin Tengah Village. This community service program aimed to integrate economic management principles with public health interventions to foster household food self-sufficiency and mitigate stunting risks through the implementation of the "Eco-Nutri" model. The program was conducted over six months using a systematic four-stage approach consisting of social mapping, integrated education on financial literacy and nutrition, field implementation of vertical farming systems, and sustainability monitoring. Results indicated that the Eco-Nutri model successfully transformed 85% of previously idle land into productive gardens and led to a 25-30% reduction in daily household vegetable expenditures, allowing families to reallocate their budget toward high-quality animal proteins. Furthermore, nutritional literacy among participants increased by 65%, demonstrating that the integration of economic resource management and ecological nutrition is a strategic and effective approach to enhancing household resilience. In conclusion, the program established a sustainable model for long-term stunting prevention by empowering the community to optimize limited resources for better health and economic outcomes

Abstract

Stunting is a condition characterized by impaired growth and development in children under five, caused by chronic nutritional deficiencies, resulting in a child being too short for their age. Objective to identify the factors associated with the incidence of stunting among children under five in West Nias Regency. This study was an analytical observational research with a case-control design conducted in West Nias Regency. The sample consisted of 25 children under five in the case group and 25 children in the control group, selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using questionnaire and analyzed using the Chi-square test, and cross-tabulation was employed to assess the strength of the association between variables by examining the Odds Ratio (OR) values. The study showed that energy adequacy (OR = 8.333; CI = 2.280–38.762), protein adequacy (OR = 8.000; CI = 1.839–38.175), maternal knowledge (OR = 8.000; CI = 1.839–38.175), maternal education (OR = 23.677; CI = 4.385–118.568), and family income (OR = 14.222; CI = 2.690–61.680) were identified as risk factors for stunting. In contrast, other variables in this study, including low birth weight (OR = 1.678; CI = 0.346–10.604), breastfeeding history (OR = 0.463; CI = 0.35–5.988), and maternal occupation (OR = 1.356; CI = 0.563–4.64), were not found to be significant risk factors for stunting. Inadequate energy and protein intake, limited maternal knowledge, low maternal education, and low family income are risk factors for stunting among children aged 0–59 months.

Abstract

Clean and Healthy Living Behavior (CHLB) is a promotive and preventive approach to improving public health, one of which is through proper Handwashing with Soap (HWWS). However, the implementation of correct HWWS practices remains suboptimal among residents of Sei Pematang Pasir Village. This community service program aimed to enhance community knowledge and practical skills regarding CHLB through education and HWWS training. The methods included observation, interviews, interactive health education, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and evaluation using pre-tests, post-tests, and observation sheets. The results demonstrated significant improvements in participants’ knowledge of CHLB, the benefits of HWWS, critical times for handwashing, and the six-step handwashing technique. Participants also showed better practical skills in performing HWWS according to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations, particularly in using soap, cleaning between the fingers, thumbs, fingertips, and rinsing hands properly. These findings indicate that combining health education with demonstrations and practical training effectively improves community knowledge, skills, and CHLB practices, thereby contributing to the sustainable prevention of infectious diseases and promoting better public health outcomes.
