Abstract

An abstract is one of the important parts in a research paper. It must give detail information to the readers. This research aimed to analyze abstracts’ content by using Move model proposed by Hyland (2003). It consists of introduction, purpose, method, result or product, and conclusion.  This research used a qualitative method which specifically used content analysis design. Content analysis design was used because the researcher analyzed the content of abstracts taken from PROJECT Journal article which meant whether the writers presented the detail information as Move model or not. Evidently, from 15 articles analyzed, it was only one person who displayed detail information which was appropriate with Move model and the others were still not what the researcher expected except in informing the methods used. From the result of analysis, the understanding of writers about giving detail information in an abstract still lacks. It proves that the data finding presented in the result showed the weakness of abstracts which were not suitable yet with Move model.

Abstract

Students’ competence in writing skills plays a significant role in leading them to success in learning English. However, in reality, many Indonesian students experience problems in creating quality texts, in particular descriptive ones. This study aims to examine low-achiever students' problems in writing descriptive text. The study was conducted in a private Senior High School in Bandung. The data was gained from eight students' works on descriptive text. They were obtained from their English teacher. The data was analyzed qualitatively using Miles & Huberman’ (1991) framework of qualitative data analysis, Jacobs et al’s (1981) components of writing, and Byrne’s (1998) types of writing difficulty. The finding shows that the students experienced serious linguistic and cognitive problems in writing the text, in particular in the areas of content, language use, organization, vocabulary, and mechanics.  Finally, this finding implies that (1) teaching writing should emphasize the process rather than the product, and (2) providing knowledge of autonomous learning to students is essential so that students can learn and practice writing independently outside the classroom.

Abstract

Writing is a key component of English language learning. This study aimed to explore the difficulties faced by junior high school students in writing descriptive texts in English and to identify the linguistic aspects that hinder their performance. In this study, the researchers used a qualitative case study design which involved 36 seventh-grade students from SMPN 8 Cimahi as the research subjects. The findings revealed that students performed best in content (26.89%), indicating that they were able to stay on topic and generate relevant ideas. In contrast, the lowest scores were found in grammar (16.61%) and mechanics (17.99%), reflecting frequent errors in tense use, subject–verb agreement, punctuation, and capitalization. Interviews further found that limited vocabulary, low writing confidence, and difficulty in idea organization were major obstacles. Despite these challenges, students showed positive attitudes toward learning English and were more motivated when engaging in fun and interactive learning activities, such as games and outdoor tasks. These findings suggest that integrating vocabulary-building activities and communicative grammar practice into writing instruction can help students enhance their descriptive writing skills.
