Abstract

The 2004 Aceh tsunami has changed the way disaster management is viewed, from emergency response to a focus on prevention and disaster risk reduction. In post-disaster efforts, teachers play an important role as education centres for students in recognising, coping with and preparing for disasters, which is key in minimising the impact of future disasters. This study aims to determine the level of geography teachers' understanding of earthquake and tsunami disaster management in State Senior High Schools (SMAN) in Banda Aceh City. This research uses quantitative research methods with ex post facto research type. The subjects in this study were geography teachers at the Banda Aceh City State Senior High School totalling 17 people. Data collection techniques using a questionnaire with 4 indicators of disaster management (mitigation, preparedness, emergency response and recovery) which are divided into 30 questions. The data analysis technique used in this research is a simple percentage formula. The results showed that the level of understanding of geography teachers on earthquake and tsunami disaster management in the category of very understand (76-100%) totalled 13 people, while 4 people belonged to the category of understand (56-75%). It can be concluded that geography teachers at state senior high schools (SMAN) in Banda Aceh city have a very good understanding of earthquake and tsunami disaster management. This excellent understanding is motivated by positive preparation for future disasters, specialised training, experience, access to information, risk awareness and institutional support influencing the level of understanding. Keywords : Understanding, Geography teacher, Disaster management.
