Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study was aimed to evaluate two contrasting perspectives on learning English. The first perspective suggests that learning grammar is not too important to be able to speak English. It argues that since native English speakers do not consciously follow grammar rules, learners should focus on speaking practice instead of worrying about grammar. The second perspective argues that the importance of learning grammar is to construct proper sentences in conversations. It believes that mastering grammar is essential for effectively learning English and that excluding grammar makes learning the language impossible. To evaluate these viewpoints, informal conversations and a monologue by three purposively selected native English speakers from an English Talk Show, Sitcom, and Vlog on YouTube were analysed using a thematic analysis. The data were collected through a combination of non-participant and structured observations. The findings revealed that, contrary to the first perspective, native English speakers consistently use proper grammar, even in informal contexts.   Keywords: English Talk show, Grammar and Structure Usage, Sitcom, Vlog

Abstract

This presentation aimed to disseminate knowledge about the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) to students of Sumatera Selatan University of Palembang. It is widely recognized that English pronunciation poses challenges due to several reasons. Firstly, many English words are not pronounced as they are spelled. Secondly, diphthongs often lack consistency from the way they are formed, in which combined vowels are producing sounds different from the original in the syllable. Thirdly, some letters are completely silent in certain contexts. Given these difficulties faced by English learners, the presenters sought to highlight the IPA as a practical solution to improve pronunciation accuracy. The feedback gathered after the session indicated that the presentation was highly informative and beneficial, as reflected in the students' responses documented in this report.

Data were gathered through error analysis of the blog text, interviews with language experts, and feedback from potential readers. The findings reveal common grammatical issues and inappropriate lexeme use, which were addressed through iterative revisions, significantly improving the script's quality. The blog is a resource for tourists seeking information about tourism destinations, explicitly aiming to facilitate the easy discovery of Kopi 16Pro Palembang. The blog was uploaded on July 9, 2024; after 5 days of being uploaded, the blog received 80 views and several positive comments, such as "what a nice view" and "so informative and cannot wait to go there.” Finally, it concludes that blog writing can effectively develop language skills and promote business.
