Abstract

As individuals enter old age, they typically experience a decline in physical condition, characterized by reduced muscle strength that subsequently impairs bodily movement and functionality. These age-related physical changes often result in mobility impairments, limiting the elderly’s ability to maintain postural stability necessary for performing daily activities, and thereby increasing the risk of falls. Balance disorders are among the primary factors contributing to the elderly’s vulnerability to physical injuries from falls. This study, presented in the form of a literature review, aims to explore strategies for enhancing postural stability as a means to mitigate fall risk among older adults. Employing a scoping review methodology, this research investigates the effectiveness of balance exercise interventions in fall prevention. The literature search was conducted systematically following the PRISMA 2020 Flow Diagram guidelines and utilized three primary databases: PubMed, ScienceDirect, and SAGE Journals. The findings indicate that several exercise-based interventions, such as the Balance-Enhancing Exercise Program (BEEP), Walking Meditation, and Multi-system Physical Exercise (MPE) are effective in reducing the likelihood of falls in the elderly. It is concluded that fall risk is a significant concern among older individuals; however, this risk can be managed, particularly in those who engage in regular physical training and possess sound mental health. Among the evaluated interventions, the Self-Administered Balance-Enhancing Exercise Program (BEEP) appears to be the most effective in minimizing fall risk in elderly populations.

Abstract

This study investigates the influence of land use on soil physical properties and horizon thickness in Mukomuko Regency, Indonesia, to assess the impacts of agricultural practices on soil quality. Conducted between February and April 2020, the research utilized a nested design across four districts, with laboratory analyses performed at the Soil Science Laboratory, Bengkulu University. Land use types evaluated included oil palm, rubber, and natural forest. Variables measured comprised soil structure, horizon thickness, aggregate stability, bulk density (BD), texture, and organic carbon (C-organic). Statistical analysis (ANOVA, p < 0.05) revealed significant effects of land use on BD, C organic content, and soil texture, whereas aggregate stability was not significantly influenced by vegetation type or depth. Forest soils exhibited the highest C-organic content (5.78%) and lowest BD (0.82 g cm⁻³), contrasting with oil palm soils, which had the lowest C-organic content (4.22%) and highest BD (0.86 g cm⁻³). Texture analysis showed forest soils had higher sand (19.69%) and clay (50.20%) fractions, while rubber land had the highest silt content (57.59%). Soil physical properties generally declined with depth under rubber and oil palm but fluctuated in forest soils. These results suggest that vegetation type significantly affects soil quality, with forest ecosystems maintaining superior soil conditions compared to intensively managed agricultural systems. Adoption of sustainable land management practices is essential to mitigate soil degradation and enhance long-term productivity.

Twenty one of Dayakese students as participants. They filled out 9 items of questionnaire and interview was done with 6 items related ways to reduce their anxiety. The observation was done related to students behavior while speaking performance. The result from open-ended questionnaire show that most of the students suffered from anxiety in public speaking performance because of the aspects of self-related, lecturer-related, classmates-related, and the material-related. The result of interview show that students had their own ways to reduce their anxiety which are mental and physical. Mentally, they prepared and asked their classmates to help them speak well by giving comments and suggestions. Physically, they did relaxation and be confidence before doing speaking performance. The result of observation participants went blank and lost utterences during speaking performance. Besides that, lower voice, unclear pronounciation, unnecessary movements, and dry mouth were show students behavior during speaking performance.

Abstract

Speaking anxiety is a major challenge for health students, particularly pharmacy students, in developing effective communication skills that are essential for their future professional practice. Communication competence is a crucial component of pharmacy education, as pharmacists are required to provide clear information, counselling, and health education to patients. High levels of speaking anxiety can hinder students’ ability to express their ideas confidently, both in academic settings and clinical practice. This study aimed to identify and analyze strategies to reduce speaking anxiety among pharmacy students and support effective communication. A pre-test and post-test experimental design was employed, involving 30 students from the Diploma III Pharmacy Program at Politeknik Kesehatan Borneo Citra Medika, South Kalimantan, Indonesia. Data were collected using structured questionnaires to measure speaking anxiety before and after the intervention, as well as students’ commonly used coping strategies. Data analysis was conducted using the Wilcoxon test to determine the differences in speaking anxiety levels before and after the intervention. The results indicated that relaxation techniques, peer support, and systematic practice through role-play and simulations were effective in reducing speaking anxiety. Careful preparation prior to presentations and constructive feedback from instructors were also associated with improved communication performance. These findings highlight the importance of integrating anxiety reduction strategies into the pharmacy curriculum to enhance students’ confidence and communication skills, thereby better preparing them to become effective health communicators in their professional practice
