Abstract

Bullying behaviour has remained a global issue with far-reaching consequences on their psychological well-being, social relationships, and academic performance among victims. Studies linking personality traits and self-esteem on bullying behavior within specific cultural contexts are lacking. Therefore, this study examined the predictive ability of personality traits and self-esteem on bullying behaviour among in-school adolescents in Ibadan North Local Government Area. Cross sectional survey design was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select the study location. Data were collected from 387 participants using validated scales and analyzed using multiple regression analysis and independent samples t-test to test two hypotheses that were accepted at p < 0.01 level of significance. The result demonstrated that personality traits and self-esteem jointly predicted bullying behavior among study participants [R² = .082, F(6, 380) = 5.66, p < .01]. In addition, the results revealed that agreeableness (β = .24, t = 4.58, p < .01) and conscientiousness (β = -0.12, t = -2.37, p < .01) independently predicted bullying behavior among study participants. However, self-esteem, extraversion, openness to experience and neuroticism did not independently predict bullying behavior among study participants. The novelty of the study is that it is the first time bullying behaviour is studied in a specific cultural milieu in Ibadan. It is recommended that a comprehensive, personality-focused anti-bullying programs be designed and implemented to reflect the cultural and educational contexts among in-school adolescents.

Abstract

Parenting is a multifaceted journey filled with joys, challenges, and responsibilities that significantly affect the well-being of both parents and children. Studies that investigated parenting styles have used different predictors with results giving varied results. This study examines the predictability of perceived parental stress and emotional intelligence on parenting styles among married couples in Ibadan, Nigeria. Cross-sectional survey design was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select the study population. Data were collected from 393 participants using validated questionnaires and analyzed using t-test of independent samples and multiple regressions. Two hypotheses were tested and accepted at p <.05 level of significance. The results revealed that perceived parental stress and emotional intelligence jointly predicted parenting styles [R2=.06, F(5,392)= 4.58, p <.05]. In addition, the result indicated that regulation of emotional appraisal (β = 15, t = 2.45, p <.05) and use of emotion (β =.15, t = 2.58, p <.05) dimensions of emotional intelligence independently predicted parenting styles. Finally, gender significantly influenced parenting styles [t(391)= 2.11, p <.05] such that male participants reported higher perceived parenting styles (M= 91.37, SD = 22.49) compared to their female counterparts (M = 87.22, SD= 16.29). The study concluded that perceived parental stress and emotional intelligence are strong predictors of parenting styles among study participants. It is recommended that stress management programs should be put in place to help parents reduce stress levels to improve their ability to provide better parenting care to their children.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of depression and hopelessness on suicidal ideation among undergraduates of the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The study adopted cross-sectional survey design while purposive sampling technique was used to select the study population. Data were conveniently collected from 200 participants using validated questionnaires and analyzed using zero-order correlation and independent sample t-test statistics and accepted at p <.001 level of significance. The result revealed that depression (r=-.23, p <.00) and hopelessness (r=-.32, p <.001) negatively correlated with suicidal ideation among study participants. Furthermore, both depression [t (197) =-3.65, p < .001] and hopelessness [t(197) = -4.85, p <0.001] significantly contributed to suicidal ideation among study participants. However, there was no gender difference in suicidal ideation among study participants. The study concludes that depression and hopelessness strongly correlated with suicidal ideation among undergraduates of the University of Ibadan. The study recommends that the university authority should have a functional mental health clinic to attend to students diagnosed with suicidal thoughts and other psychological dysfunctions.

Abstract

Efficient transportation management plays a vital role in minimizing operational costs in the tobacco manufacturing industry. This study presents the application of Integer Programming using Excel Solver to optimize distribution logistics and reduce transportation expenses in a cigarette factory. The research employs a quantitative descriptive approach using simulated data representing production capacities and regional demand. A linear programming model is constructed to minimize total transportation costs while considering constraints such as factory capacity, regional demand, and non-negativity of shipment volumes. Excel Solver, as an accessible and widely adopted optimization tool, is utilized to determine the optimal allocation of product deliveries from factories to various distribution zones. The results indicate that Solver provides a cost-effective and practical solution for identifying optimal transport routes, reducing overall distribution costs, and improving operational efficiency. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis reveals the robustness of the model in responding to changes in cost parameters and capacity constraints. The study highlights the strategic potential of spreadsheet-based decision support systems in enhancing supply chain efficiency within the tobacco industry and similar manufacturing sectors..

Abstract

Quality of work-life has continued to dominate research as it is known to affect workers’ performance and organizational productivity. Studies have investigated different predictors of quality of work-life with different results. This study examines organizational climate, organizational safety and workplace stress as predictors of quality of work-life among workers in multinational companies in Rivers State, Nigeria. Cross-sectional survey design was adopted while purposive sampling technique was used to select two multinational companies in the study area. Data were collected from 207 participants using validated questionnaires. Data were analyzed using multiple regressions and independent samples t-test to test two hypotheses which were accepted at p <.001 level of significance. The result indicated that organizational climate, organizational safety and workplace stress jointly predicted quality of work-life among study participants R2 =.398, F( 3, 204) = 124. 461, p < .001. Furthermore, the results revealed that organizational climate (β = .105, p <.001), organizational safety (β= .164, p <.001) and workplace stress (β = -.129, p <.001) independently predicted quality of work-life among study participants. Finally, gender significantly influences quality of work [t(107) = 44.48, p <.001] such that female workers reported higher quality of work-life compared to their male counterparts. The study concludes that organizational climate, organizational safety and workplace stress served as excellent predictors of quality of work-life among study participants. The study recommends that multinational companies should develop positive organizational culture and workplace safety with minimal workplace stress which would improve overall quality of work-life among workers.
