Abstract

This research examines the persuasive strategies used by student candidates in the 2020 Head Boy election at The Fulham Boys School in London, England. Specifically, on how teenagers convey persuasive messages in a formal school-based leadership context to persuade their peers. The study aims to identify and categorize the persuasive elements of their campaign speeches through Petty and Cacioppo's the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) which differentiates between central (logical, content driven) and peripheral (emotional, stylistic) routes to persuasion. With a qualitative descriptive approach, the campaign speeches were collected in video format and transcribed, then they were content analyzed according to several categories. Each persuasive statement was classified according to the ELM principles. All four candidates were found to be applying center and peripheral routes and had responsibility of both audience demands and the leadership image. Some candidates were predisposed to use rational solutions, while others made more use on emotional appeals. This highlights the complexities involved in a student speaker's role in a leadership speech that balanced the appeal of the message against the message itself.

Abstract

This research discusses the role of literature during the Abbasid Dynasty as a means of spreading Islamic values in the middle of the development of Islamic culture and science. At this time, literature not only functioned as a form of artistic expression, but also as a medium of moral learning, preaching, and social criticism that could easily be accepted by the wider community. The purpose of this study is to analyze how Islamic values were inserted in the literary works of the Abbasid era and to understand the social roles played by the great writers of the time. The study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive-historical method and literature study technique. Data sources come from various literary works in the form of poetry, prose, maqamah, and related secondary references. The content and context of the works of influential literary figures were analyzed. The results of the study show that literary works not only serve as a reflection of cultural development, but also an effective means of preaching using beautiful language selection, subtle moral messages, and strong emotional appeal. In conclusion, literature plays a major role in building awareness of Islamic values in people's lives and is one of the important foundations in strengthening Islamic civilization.

Abstract

Music is one of the effective media for conveying Islamic values, including the concept of tawakal (trust in Allah). Through song lyrics, religious messages can be delivered to listeners in language that is easy to understand while conveying profound meaning. This study aims to analyze the representation of tawakal in the lyrics of Insha Allah by Maher Zain using a semantic approach based on Al-Ghazali’s perspective. This study employed a qualitative approach using the qualitative content analysis method. The research data consisted of selected song lyric excerpts, which were analyzed based on their lexical and contextual meanings and subsequently classified into the three aspects of tawakal according to Al-Ghazali, namely knowledge ('ilm), spiritual state (hal), and action (amal). The findings indicate that the lyrics of Insha Allah represent tawakal through faith in Allah, the transformation of one's inner state from despair to hope, and the act of returning to Allah through prayer and complete surrender. These findings demonstrate that the song functions not only as a form of entertainment but also as a medium for conveying Islamic spiritual values while enriching semantic studies on Islamic song lyrics.
