Abstract

The formation of new lexical items through the combination of two or more lexemes is referred to as compounding, a significant process within the field of morphology. As noted by O’Grady (1996), compound words are typically categorized into two types: endocentric and exocentric compounds. Katamba (1994:320) emphasizes that endocentric compounds exhibit greater productivity compared to their exocentric counterparts. This study aims to examine the morphological structures of endocentric compound words found in a specific object—namely, the speech text School Strike for Climate. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method, the research analyzes and interprets the semantic classification of the identified compounds. The speech transcript reveals 26 occurrences of endocentric compounds, all of which function as compound nouns and consist of nominal components.

Abstract

This research examines the persuasive strategies used by student candidates in the 2020 Head Boy election at The Fulham Boys School in London, England. Specifically, on how teenagers convey persuasive messages in a formal school-based leadership context to persuade their peers. The study aims to identify and categorize the persuasive elements of their campaign speeches through Petty and Cacioppo's the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) which differentiates between central (logical, content driven) and peripheral (emotional, stylistic) routes to persuasion. With a qualitative descriptive approach, the campaign speeches were collected in video format and transcribed, then they were content analyzed according to several categories. Each persuasive statement was classified according to the ELM principles. All four candidates were found to be applying center and peripheral routes and had responsibility of both audience demands and the leadership image. Some candidates were predisposed to use rational solutions, while others made more use on emotional appeals. This highlights the complexities involved in a student speaker's role in a leadership speech that balanced the appeal of the message against the message itself.

Abstract

SEFEO is an abbreviation of one of the most influential English communities in Indonesia, Share English for Everything Community which was established in 2012 by Zelky Yusuf as the founder and runs until now. SEFEO has a different system for running routine English activities including the figures commonly called SEFEO stars consisting of international students and students who have extraordinary appeal in terms of appearance, popularity in their daily lives, and English language skills. This study, in addition to intending to explain theoretically the existence of elements of politeness theory in conversations in one of the SEFEO English community podcasts. The researcher tries to find the possibility of social factors occurring in the SEFEO English community. Politeness strategies consist of a few principles including off-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and bald on record According to Brown and Levinson (1978). The researcher chose a qualitative content analysis research method. The researcher took a sample of a podcast entitled "Passion" which was narrated by Robin and Jack and a sample of a podcast entitled “Our Experiences in Learning English” which was narrated by Zelky Yusuf (the owner) and Zulfani. The researcher managed to find a relationship between politeness strategies and a person's social status in the community, including in the podcast entitled "Passion" hosted by Robin and Jack. It turns out that the interaction between the two did not show a significant gap because their status was equally respected in society Meanwhile, the interaction between the president directly and the members who are considered ordinary in the podcast entitled "Our Experiences in Learning English" shows a politeness phenomenon where because of the indication of closeness between the two, the result is that their interaction process is very casual and does not significantly show the gap between the two because one has a higher position in the community environment.

Abstract

This paper provides a comprehensive comparative textual analysis of Chapter 1 of Louisa May Alcott's seminal novel, Little Women. The primary focus is a diachronic examination of lexical and orthographic variations between the original 1869 Roberts Brothers first edition and the 1970 Everyman's Library paperback edition, spanning a century of publication history. The central research problem addresses the process and implications of textual alteration in classic literature reprints. This study aims to identify, categorise, and analyse these changes to illuminate the editorial decisions, whether conscious or unconscious, that shape the evolution of a literary text for subsequent generations of readers. The methodology employed is a meticulous side-by-side comparative reading of the chapter, documenting discrepancies in vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, grammar, and capitalisation. The results indicate a consistent pattern of modernisation in the 1970 edition. Key findings include the substitution of colloquial or archaic vocabulary, the updating of orthography (e.g., ‘dont’ to ‘don’t’ ), and the modification of punctuation to align with contemporary conventions. These alterations, while enhancing immediate readability, subtly modify the original linguistic flavor, narrative rhythm, and historical context of Alcott's work. The preservation of certain authorial idiosyncrasies, such as character-specific misspellings, is also noted, suggesting a nuanced editorial framework. The study concludes that such textual evolution has a tangible impact on character voice and overall tone, underscoring the importance of edition selection in both academic and leisure reading.

Abstract

This research explores the expression of emotion and hope in the lyrics of the pop song “Diary Depressiku” by Last Child through a semiotic analysis approach. The song, inspired by the vocalist's personal experience, reflects deep emotional struggles stemming from family problems, especially parental divorce and longing for affection. Using a qualitative method, this research examines the semantic features of the song's lyrics to reveal how feelings of sadness, despair, envy, and ultimately hope are constructed and conveyed. The analysis revealed that the lyrics use a variety of emotive language and metaphors to depict the protagonist's internal conflicts and her journey towards acceptance and resilience. In addition, the research highlights how the song not only articulates personal pain but also offers a sense of hope and encouragement to listeners facing similar situations. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of how pop music lyrics can serve as a medium for emotional expression and healing, especially for young listeners experiencing family challenges.

Abstract

Slang has been widely used by various groups, especially teenagers, indicating that there is rapid development, increasingly advanced technology, and likewise, the entertainment media industry. This paper reports the results of a qualitative method that aims to explore and find data on the types of slang contained in the script of the movie Inside Out 2. According to Allan & Burridge's (2006) theory on the classification of slang word types, there are five types. The five types are Fresh & Creative, Clipping, Flippant, Acronym, and Imitative. By applying the five classifications to the Inside Out 2 movie script, there are a total of 229 data points, but only four types are found in the Inside Out 2 movie script, namely Fresh & Creative, Clipping, Flippant, and Imitative. Through the analysis of slang categories and their usage in the movie "Inside Out 2," this study aims to offer a valuable perspective on how the linguistic decisions of writers and filmmakers represent the speech patterns and life experiences of the younger generation.

Abstract

This study analyzes the psychological trauma experienced by Ralph in Lord of the Flies by William Golding through Gustav Jung’s literary psychology. It focuses on how trauma shapes Ralph’s character development using Jungian concepts: shadow, individuation, and collective unconscious. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method. The main source is the novel itself, supported by literature on trauma theory and Jungian psychology. Data is collected through literature review and text analysis. The analysis uses Jung’s theory to interpret Ralph’s psychological journey. Findings show that Ralph’s trauma is linked to violence, loss, and destruction, which affect his growth. The shadow concept reveals Ralph’s inner conflict between savage instincts and his effort to stay civilized. His individuation emerges as he faces internal darkness, especially when mourning Piggy and witnessing the island’s ruin. The study concludes that trauma significantly influences personal identity and group dynamics. It also highlights the relevance of psychological analysis in literature

Abstract

This research examines the phenomenon of code switching and code mixing in Naura Ayu’s broadcast on Instagram from a sociolinguistic perspective. Language as a social communication tool reflects the dynamics of interaction in a bilingual society, especially in the context of social media, which is a space for young people’s expression. This study aims to identify the types and functions of code switching and code mixing used by Naura Ayu, as well as the reasons behind their use. Qualitative method is used with documentation technique to collect data from Naura Ayu’s Instagram broadcast. The analysis shows that Naura Ayu uses three types of code switching (intra-sentential, inter-sentential, emblematic) and two types of code mixing (intra-sentential, intra-lexical) dominantly. The use of both phenomena serves to clarify information, express bilingual identity, strengthen messages, and adapt communication to diverse audiences. This research contributes to the development of language studies in the digital realm and bilingual communication in Indonesia, while emphasizing the role of sociolinguistics in understanding language variation in modern social contexts.
