Abstract

The use of medicinal plants and traditional herbal medicine reflects the local wisdom of the Indonesian people, deeply rooted in their culture and daily life. However, international awareness and appreciation of this heritage remain limited. To address this, a community engagement program was implemented to promote Indonesian medicinal plants and jamu to a broader audience. The program aimed to enhance cross-cultural knowledge exchange and foster research collaboration. This initiative involved a series of workshops introducing various medicinal plants and practical demonstrations on preparing jamu. The activities were conducted at the JAKIM office, Sarawak, Malaysia, with 42 participants in attendance. Data were collected through participant feedback surveys, assessing aspects such as the clarity of instruction, effectiveness of workshop methods, practical relevance, and overall benefits. The results indicated overwhelmingly positive responses, with participants expressing appreciation for the informative content and hands-on approach. The findings suggest that such programs play a crucial role in increasing awareness and preserving traditional knowledge. In conclusion, this initiative successfully supported knowledge and cultural exchange while fostering continued research collaboration in the field of medicinal plants and herbal medicine.

Abstract

Telaga Air Village in Kuching, Sarawak, possesses abundant fisheries and aquaculture resources. The Institut Kemahiran Islam Malaysia Sarawak (IKMAS), as a center for education and community engagement, can foster students’ entrepreneurial spirit by leveraging these local potentials. One concrete effort is providing training in the diversification of fermented food products. This program included the introduction of fish-based fermented products, practical training in fermented sambal production, packaging techniques, sterilization, and evaluation through participant response surveys. Results showed that 100% of participants had never attended similar training. About 83% found the material new and insightful, 72.5% considered it easy to replicate, and 87.5% rated the material delivery as clear. Additionally, 87.5% appreciated the accessibility of the venue, and the organizing committee received a 90% satisfaction rating. The results of the analysis showed a lack of learning media that is contextual and in accordance with the student's environment. The pocket book developed contains a description of the morphology, benefits, and utilisation of aromatic plants in the traditions of the Sambas Malay community. Expert validation showed that this pocket book was very feasible to use with a material expert validation score of 89%, linguist 88%, and media expert 99%. Implementation was carried out through small and large scale trials on grade X students at SMA Negeri 4 Sungai Raya. The trial results showed a very good response with a score of 95% on the small scale trial and 93% on the large scale.
