Abstract

Background of study: Ḥalāl industry is an emerging sector with great potential for growth and economic development in Nigeria. The large Muslim population is a driving factor that creates opportunities for its growth to improve the national economy. However, these opportunities, as well as the impeding challenges, have still been poorly understood.Aims and scope of paper: This paper seeks to examine the opportunities and challenges posed by the Ḥalāl industry in Nigeria. It provides a comprehensive review of the sector, outlining its structure, current state, potential for growth and the intimidating challenges. Methods: The paper draws data from both primary and secondary sources; obtained from interviews, industry literature, and government reports.Result: The results show that although Nigeria has a lot of promise because of its Muslim consumer base, agricultural products, and enterprising populace, the sector is still fragmented.  Lack of public knowledge, poor infrastructure, low adherence to international ḥalāl norms, and the absence of a national ḥalāl authority are some of the main obstacles.  However, prospects in export markets, agro-processing, Islamic financing assistance, youth-led entrepreneurship, and regional trade agreements like the AfCFTA.Conclusion: The research concludes that, driven by the large Muslim population in Nigeria, the ḥalāl industry has strong potential to boost economic growth through local production, greater exports, and tourism development.

Abstract

The unique framework provided by Islamic banking and finance, which is based on social welfare, equity, and moral principles that forbid exploitative practices like interest (riba), makes it particularly pertinent to underprivileged groups that experience structural economic marginalization. Because of structural obstacles and a lack of trust, many vulnerable groups continue to be neglected by traditional financial institutions, even in spite of the expansion of financial inclusion initiatives. The purpose of this study is to investigate the ways in which Islamic financial instruments, including qard al-hasan (benevolent loans), zakat (almsgiving), waqf (endowment), and profit-and-loss sharing models like mudarabah and musharakah, can be used to advance economic justice and increase financial inclusion in these communities. Purposive sampling, case study analysis, content analysis, and documentary/secondary data are all used in this qualitative study to examine how Islamic Financial Institutions (IFIs) contribute to inclusive growth. Thematic analysis is employed to find trends and evaluate the success of Islamic finance projects relative to traditional financial methods. According to preliminary research, Islamic finance's ethical investment practices, wealth redistribution, and risk-sharing all greatly enhance social justice and economic empowerment. Conclusion: The study comes to the conclusion that incorporating Islamic finance into national financial inclusion plans can be a long-term solution to combat poverty and promote equitable growth. It also makes policy suggestions to fortify its institutional and legal foundation. Economic justice and financial inclusion for underserved populations can be greatly improved by incorporating Islamic banking concepts into national financial systems.

Abstract

As the world grapples with the escalating impacts of climate change, innovative financing mechanisms to support mitigation efforts have become increasingly urgent. This study investigates the potential role of waqf an Islamic endowment system in addressing climate change challenges in Northern Nigeria, a region that faces a number of environmental and climate challenges particularly in terms of environmental degradation and climatic variability. The research utilizes a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with key stakeholders, including waqf administrators, community leaders, and environmental activists, alongside quantitative analysis of existing waqf funds and projects related to climate adaptation. Findings reveal that waqf funds can be effectively leveraged to support various climate change mitigation initiatives, such as afforestation, water conservation, and renewable energy projects. The study highlights several successful case studies where waqf-supported activities have enhanced local resilience and contributed to sustainable resource management. Furthermore, it identifies significant barriers to the implementation of environmentally focused waqf initiatives, including lack of awareness, inadequate regulatory frameworks, and limited community engagement. The paper proposes actionable recommendations to optimize the role of waqf in climate change mitigation, including enhancing legal structures to support environmental waqf, fostering collaboration between waqf institutions and environmental NGOs, and implementing educational campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable practices within waqf management. Ultimately, this study advocates for a paradigm shift in the perception of waqf from a purely charitable endeavor to a comprehensive instrument for sustainability and climate resilience, thereby contributing to the broader discourse on integrating indigenous financial mechanisms into global climate change strategies.

Abstract

Background of study: This community-based study examines how Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) with Waqf can improve the quality of education in Islamic and secular schools in the rural community of Gombe, Nigeria.Aims and scope of paper: The main objective is to present a framework for integrating Islamic social finance into contemporary educational development, empowering communities to shape the direction of education in Nigeria. The focus of the study is on rural communities in Dukku, Balanga, and Yamaltu/Deba, Gombe. Methods: This study used a participatory approach, combining field surveys, focus groups, stakeholder interviews, and pilot intervention activities in several rural schools.Result: Through local Waqf Education Committees and collaboration with private education NGOs, the program has successfully supported teacher mentorship programs, distributed teaching supplies, and improved classroom facilities using funds and labor from Waqf. Conclusion: Findings show that the Waqf-PPP model is feasible and crucial for revitalizing rural educational institutions by addressing the root causes of poor-quality teaching. This study recommends scaling up similar models through state policy support, technical assistance for local Waqf organizations, and raising awareness among rural communities of the social impact of educational Waqf.

Abstract

Climate change and environmental degradation have become major worldwide issues, particularly in poorer nations. There are still gaps in funding and community-level instruction for sustainable environmental practices, despite global commitments to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although the Islamic institution of waqf, a type of perpetual charity endowment, has long been important for social welfare, little is known about how it might help with sustainability and environmental education. The purpose of this study is to investigate the applicability and potential of waqf in advancing sustainable development and environmental education. It looks at how waqf can be set up and used to support environmental initiatives, ecological literacy, and awareness-raising initiatives both inside and outside of Muslim communities. Using content analysis of original Islamic law sources, historical case studies, and modern waqf models from nations like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Turkey, a qualitative research approach was used. To learn more about real-world applications and difficulties, semi-structured interviews were also done with community leaders, environmental academics, and waqf officials. By creating eco-friendly schools, assisting research facilities, financing green technology, and supporting awareness campaigns based on Islamic ecological ideals, waqf can make a substantial contribution to environmental education and sustainable development, according to the study. Examples from history show that waqf holdings were historically utilized to protect public amenities and natural resources like forests and water sources. In certain nations with a majority of Muslims, contemporary waqf organizations are already starting to adjust to sustainability goals. However, because of a lack of knowledge, legal restrictions, and a lack of creativity in waqf management, this integration is still quite low. The scope of this study focuses on a few Muslim-majority nations with operational waqf organizations. Access to waqf administrative documents and some parties' reluctance to reveal financial strategies are further barriers to empirical data
