Abstract

This study examines how Pixar’s animated short film For the Birds employs metaphorical behaviour and nonverbal idioms. Despite lacking spoken speech, the movie uses human emotions, physical gestures, and symbolic sequences to convey a story full of humour and social commentary. In the film, many little birds make fun of a bigger, clumsier-looking bird, only to encounter unexpected repercussions. This story, which is both quiet and expressive, provides a rare chance to examine idiomatic meanings that are expressed nonverbally. The study uses a qualitative descriptive approach to find and analyse several scenes that metaphorically illustrate well-known sayings like “don’t judge a book by its cover,” “patience is a virtue,” and “what goes around comes around.” The results demonstrate how action, gesture, and facial expression may all serve as visual languages that represent virtues like poetic justice, humility, and tolerance. These visual idioms improve the narrative by enabling viewers to deduce intricate meanings without using spoken words. Finally, by demonstrating how idioms can transcend language through metaphorical representation in multimodal texts, this study highlights the potency of visual narrative and advances the discipline of visual pragmatics

Abstract

Companies are currently required to have fast, accurate, and integrated information systems to be able to compete in the digital era. Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is one of the systems widely implemented because it can integrate various business processes ranging from finance, production, marketing, to human resources. This research is a literature review that aims to examine the role of ERP systems in improving company financial performance. The results of various journal findings indicate that ERP implementation can increase operational efficiency, accelerate the reporting process, reduce unnecessary costs, and help management make decisions based on more accurate data. Furthermore, several studies analyzed in this research also confirm that ERP helps companies reduce human error in the process of recording and processing data. With data integration, each division can be connected, so that company activities become more transparent. This has an impact on improving the quality of financial reports, which are more timely and easier to use to evaluate company performance. ERP implementation has also been proven to support companies in increasing work productivity, because time-consuming manual processes can be automated to become more efficient. Overall, this literature review concludes that ERP has a positive impact on company financial performance, both directly and indirectly. However, ERP effectiveness is still influenced by factors such as human resource readiness, management support, and the suitability of ERP modules to the company's needs. By understanding these factors, companies can maximize the benefits of ERP as a long-term investment to improve financial performance and market competitiveness.

Abstract

Abstract

This study analyzes the politeness strategies of characters' speech acts in Langston Hughes' short story "Thank You, Ma'am" using Brown and Levinson's Politeness Theory (1987) integrated with the perspective of Islamic Moral Mysticism (Akhlak Tasawuf). A descriptive qualitative method was employed, with data collected through reading and noting techniques and purposive sampling. The primary data source consists of 15 utterances drawn from dialogues between the two main characters, Mrs. Luella Bates Washington Jones and Roger, analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña (2014) model. The findings identify three politeness strategies: positive politeness (53.3%), negative politeness (26.7%), and bald on record (20%), while the off-record strategy was absent. Positive politeness emerged as the dominant strategy, reflecting the characters' efforts to build solidarity and moral transformation. Concurrently, the Akhlak Tasawuf analysis identified three prevailing values—tawadhu' (humility), shiddiq (truthfulness and sincerity), and hifdzul lisan (guarding one's speech)—each correlating with the politeness strategies employed. These findings suggest that linguistic politeness in this short story functions not merely as a pragmatic face-management tool, but also as a representation of ethical and spiritual values that foster behavioral change and the restoration of interpersonal relationships.
