Abstract

This activity aims to provide a solution for the people of Al-Madina Housing RT 016 Sungai Mengkuang Village, Rimbo Tengah District, Bungo Regency, to treat well water that is cloudy and smells of rust into clean water with a cheap budget and a longer lifespan for use for hygiene purposes. Sanitation. The well water is cloudy and smells of rust, indicating that it contains suspended solids and metal iron (Fe). The activity method used is counseling and training in making simple water filters with cheap and easy-to-find materials. The result of the activity was that the community was enthusiastic about this activity, as evidenced by the number of residents who attended, as many as 21 people, and the number of questions asked. The results of the healthy water treatment at the activity site look clearer, and the rust smell in the water is less than before processing. This is because the filter media used in the form of activated carbon, poor sand, and dacron (filter cotton) can hold suspended solids and adsorb iron metal (Fe) in well water. By carrying out this activity, the community has become aware of the importance of clean water that complies with standard hygiene and sanitation requirements and is encouraged to make simple water filters independently. From the results of the activity, it can be concluded that: (1) the community/partners have gained an understanding of the importance of clean water by standards for sanitary hygiene requirements, (2) the community can make simple water filters independently with cheap and easy-to-obtain materials, (3) The results well water treatment in both locations look clearer and the smell of rust in the water is less than before processing.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of PKK women in producing liquid detergent as an effort to promote community empowerment and household self-reliance. The activity was conducted in Graha Rawa Bangun Housing Area, Tuah Karya Village, Tuah Madani District, Pekanbaru City. The implementation methods included educational sessions, hands-on training on liquid detergent production, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The training materials covered the introduction of raw materials, the function of each component, production procedures, and safety aspects related to the use of household chemicals. The evaluation results indicated a significant improvement in participants’ knowledge. The average level of participants’ knowledge increased from 16% in the pre-test to 85% in the post-test, with an overall improvement of 69%. Improvements were observed in both the understanding of primary cleaning agents and auxiliary ingredients in liquid detergent formulations. These findings demonstrate that an educational approach integrating simple scientific explanations with practical training is effective in enhancing participants’ capacity. The outputs of this activity include improved knowledge and skills of PKK women in producing safe and applicable liquid detergent, which has the potential to support household independence and community empowerment.

Abstract

Leachate is a liquid generated from waste decomposition containing organic matter, ammonia, heavy metals, and suspended solids in high concentrations. Improper leachate disposal can pollute soil and water around the landfill. This study aims to determine the effect of different idle stabilization techniques on COD, ammonia, and TSS removal efficiency using an aerobic Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR). Three idle variations were tested: static idle, mixed idle, and aerated idle. The SBR reactor was operated with fill (1 h), react (18 h), settle (2 h), draw (1 h), and idle (2 h) phases for four cycles. The results showed that the aerated idle variation achieved the highest removal efficiencies: COD 86.67%, ammonia 95.36%, and TSS 93.97%. Aerated idle provided better sludge stability and optimal oxygen conditions for microbial activity.

Abstract

Hazardous and toxic waste management is essential for ensuring safe, effective, and sustainable healthcare services. This study evaluated compliance with hazardous and toxic waste management practices at a Type A Riau Provincial Psychiatric Hospital, Indonesia, based on the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry Regulation No. 56 of 2015 concerning Procedures and Technical Requirements for Hazardous and Toxic Waste Management from Healthcare Facilities. The evaluation was conducted through field observations using a Likert scale-based checklist. The results showed an overall compliance score of 85.05%, classified as “very good” or “compliant” according to the assessment criteria. However, non-compliance was identified in the segregation and handling of sharps waste due to improper waste mixing. To improve performance, the hospital should strengthen the implementation of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for waste segregation, provide continuous training for healthcare workers and cleaning personnel, implement waste minimization at the source, and enhance coordination with licensed third-party waste management providers. These measures are expected to improve regulatory compliance, reduce occupational health and safety risks, prevent needlestick injuries, minimize exposure to infectious agents and environmental contamination, and ultimately strengthen public health protection within healthcare facilities and surrounding communities.
