Abstract

This research highlights the urgency of reformulating the concept of economic growth in secular economic thinking that contributes to the crisis of morality, justice and sustainability. This paradigm measures growth only quantitatively such as through GDP, but ignores the spiritual, ethical or moral, and social dimensions. This research aims to examine Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas' critique of the paradigm and offer an alternative framework based on the Islamic worldview. The method used in this research is qualitative literature with content analysis of al-Attas' main works and related academic literature. The results show that al-Attas sees the epistemological crisis of secular economics as stemming from the separation between science and revelation. He offers a solution in the form of economic Islamisation through the integration of the values of tawhid, adab, and maqashid al-syari'ah. The novelty of this research lies in the philosophical synthesis between al-Attas' metaphysical thinking and contemporary economic challenges, and encourages a shift in economic policy from material accumulation to an ethical and spiritual approach, especially in Muslim countries that want more holistic development.

Abstract

One of the most pressing and multifaceted challenges in contemporary society is the issue of justice in human life. Social inequality, discrimination, and disparities in access to fundamental rights - such as education, economic opportunities, and healthcare - serve as tangible evidence that justice often remains an abstract ideal without equitable implementation. This study examines the concept of humanity and justice in Islam through the interpretive framework of Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas, with a focus on: (1) the definition of justice, (2) the individual as the subject of justice, (3) individual freedom as the foundational principle of justice, and (4) equality as a critical prerequisite for justice. Employing a qualitative research design, this study utilizes a descriptive-analytical method combined with a philosophical exegesis approach, interpreting Qur'anic verses through philosophical theory. The findings indicate that humans, as moral agents, play a pivotal role in the realization of justice. Justice, as a core Islamic principle, originates from divine revelation and embodies balance, harmony, and the proper allocation of all things to their rightful place. Justice is achieved when individuals, acting as its practitioners, consciously and freely acknowledge and submit to Allah as the Creator, fulfill their obligations, and equitably honor the dignity of others. Al-Attas underscores the human role as vicegerents (khali>fah) on earth, bearing the responsibility to uphold justice in alignment with human nature (fit}rah). Furthermore, ethics and one’s relationship with God are identified as essential foundations for fostering justice within society and the state.

Abstract

This study discusses the comparison between the concept of the ideal human in Friedrich Nietzsche's thinking with the idea of Übermensch and Syed Muhammad Naquib al-Attas with the concept of Insān Kullī. This research is important because it delves into the ontological foundations that shape the direction and values in the formation of the ideal human being, which directly impacts the direction of civilization. The purpose of this research is to analysis the basic characteristics of each concept and to reveal the fundamental differences in Western and Islamic worldviews. This research uses a qualitative approach with a literature review and descriptive analysis method. The results of this research show that Übermensch is an individual who rejects transcendent values and builds an autonomous existence through the will to power, while Insān Kullī is a civilised figure who submits to revelation and balances reason and spirituality. The novelty of this research lies in its comprehensive comparative approach between two contrasting philosophical paradigms. Its implications are that understanding the ideal human being within the framework of each metaphysics is crucial in determining the direction of education, social development, and civilisational identity. These findings are also relevant as a conceptual foundation for the development of education and character building based on spiritual and intellectual values.
