Abstract

Differences of opinion are an inherent part of Islamic intellectual tradition and become a social reality in the religious life of Indonesian Muslims. However, the emergence of digital media, shifting patterns of authority, and the increasing politicization of religious symbols often exacerbate tensions within communities. This article examines how disagreements can be managed ethically through the framework of religious moderation. Using a qualitative library research method, the study reviews classical Islamic discourses on ikhtilaf, national policy documents on religious moderation, and contemporary socio-religious dynamics in Indonesia. The findings show that conflicts rarely arise from the substance of theological or jurisprudential differences, but rather from communication patterns, emotional responses, and weak religious literacy. The principles of moderation such as balance, tolerance, anti-violence, and respect for local traditions provide a constructive approach for interacting across divergent viewpoints. The study concludes that courteous disagreement is not only an ethical imperative but also a civic necessity for sustaining social harmony in a pluralistic nation. Keywords: Disagreement, Religious Moderation, Islamic Ethics, Tolerance

Abstract

This article examines Mahmud Shaltut’s interpretation of socio-legal Qur’anic verses through a maqasid al-shari‘ah–based approach, focusing on its methodologicalframeworkand implications for contemporary Islamic legal thought. Employing qualitative library research with a descriptive-analytical design, the study analyzes Shaltut’s exegetical works—particularly Tafsiral-Qur’anal-Kari and Al-Islam‘Aqidah waSyari‘ah—usingqualitative content analysis. The findings reveal that Shaltut positions maqasid al-shari‘ah not merely as a complementaryprinciplebut as a central hermeneutical framework guiding socio-legal interpretation. Through a thematic analysis of three key issues—women’s leadership (Q.S. An-Nisa’: 34), interreligious relations and peace (Q.S. Al-Baqarah: 256; Al-Anfal: 61), and economic justice (Q.S. Al-Baqarah: 275–280)—this study demonstrates that Shaltut consistently applies a tripartite model of ijtihad that integrates textual analysis, socio-historical context, and the higher objectives of Islamic law. His interpretive approach prioritizes the spirit of the law (ruh al-tashri‘), substantive justice, and public welfare (maslahah), allowing for contextual legal reconstruction without undermining the authority of the Qur’anic text. This study concludes that Shaltut’s maqasid-based tafsir represents a contextual-progressive exegetical modelthat significantlycontributes to the development of contemporary socio-legal hermeneutics and offers a viable methodological foundation for addressing issues of gender justice, peaceful interreligious coexistence, and equitable economicsystems.

Abstract

Studies of Muslim religious practice have largely relied on theological and normative perspectives, while analyses based on sociological approaches that treat religious practice as a social phenomenon remain relatively limited. This study aims to analyze the forms of religious practice among Muslims, identify the social factors that influence these practices, and explain the relevance of a sociological approach for understanding the dynamics of religiosity in society. A qualitative approach with a case study design was employed, involving 15 participants selected through purposive sampling, consisting of religious leaders and members of the Muslim community. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, and were analyzed using thematic analysis through the stages of data reduction, coding, categorization, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Muslim religious practice manifests in two main dimensions: ritual practice (congregational prayer, recitation of the Qur’an, and study circles) and social practice (charitable giving, gotong royong, and community-based religious activities). Family, social environment, religious education, and the role of religious leaders were found to be key determinants shaping patterns of religious practice, while variations in the intensity of practice were influenced by personal conditions such as level of busyness and access to religious activities. These results affirm that religious practice is the outcome of dynamic interaction between individuals and surrounding social structures, and thus a sociological approach is relevant and necessary for understanding the forms of Muslim religiosity more comprehensively. Theoretically, this study enriches the body of knowledge in the sociology of religion, while practically it provides a basis for religious institutions to design more contextual guidance programs and opens avenues for further research on the impact of modernization and digital media on the transformation of religious practice.
