Abstract

The discourse on al-Ahruf as-Sab'ah represents a pivotal theme in the study of Ulum al-Quran, particularly in relation to the diversity of recitations (qiraat) and Arabic dialects. This study aims to explore the existence of al-Ahruf as-Sab'ah within the frameworks of dialectology and qiraat, as well as its implications for Quranic interpretation and Islamic legal derivation. Employing a qualitative-descriptive approach through a literature review method, this research draws upon classical sources such as al-Itqan by al-Suyuti and Jami al-Bayan by al-Tabari, alongside relevant contemporary references. The analysis investigates the concept of ahruf, the historical development of qiraat, and their relationship to variations in Arabic lahjah. The findings suggest that the diversity of Quranic recitations is deeply rooted in the linguistic landscape of the time of revelation and that these variations significantly influence Quranic exegesis and the derivation of Islamic legal rulings (istinbat al-ahkam).

Abstract

Starting from the background of gender issues in the study of modern interpretation, verses that are understood as textual give rise to gender bias and trigger a long debate between patriarchs and feminists. This paper aims to unravel Amina Wadud's interpretation in terms of her thoughts and interpretation methodology used to understand the messages in the Qur'an. By using a qualitative research type with a descriptive approach method, this study reveals a deeper meaning that patriarchal bias must be abolished and replaced with the concept of gender equality where women also have the same rights as men. The results of the study show that Amina Wadud does not only carry out textual interpretation of verses, but assesses several views from classical interpretation, including, first, QS. Al-Baqarah 228, the explicit content of this verse is equality that is built on mutual agreement by considering the principles of mas'uliyah. Second, QS. Al Nisa: 36, regarding polygamy which includes three contexts, namely: economic context, reproductive context, and biological context. Then QS. An-Nisa: 34, that men and women are equal in all respects according to their respective portions.

Abstract

This article examines the formation of the Islamic state and civilization in Madinah following the hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) from Makkah, focusing on the social, political, and administrative dynamics that shaped the foundation of the early Muslim community. Through a literature-based study, Madinah formerly Yathrib is portrayed as a multicultural society consisting of the Aus and Khazraj tribes, who frequently engaged in conflict, alongside Muslim communities, Jews, hypocrites, and adherents of local beliefs. The hijrah is understood as a strategic moment that enabled the emergence of a new social order founded on justice, equality, and harmony. The Charter of Madinah is analyzed as the first constitutional document regulating inter-community relations while granting political legitimacy to the Prophet as a leader. Employing State Formation Theory and Ibn Khaldun’s concept of asabiyah, this study demonstrates that processes of group integration, establishment of authority, institutionalization of legitimacy, and law enforcement occurred systematically. The Prophet’s strategies in building the society such as forming brotherhood between the Muhajirin and Ansar, establishing the mosque as the center of communal life, promoting moral development, and organizing state administration in areas such as finance, law, and documentation are identified as crucial elements in the socio-political consolidation of Madinah.
