Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating the benefits of animated stories in the teaching of writing as suggested by Cahyono, Hidayati, & Zen (2014). This study is, say, a literature review study in which the researcher reviews the material related to the issue and observes the students as well to strengthen the validity of this study. The data obtained from both literature and observation are then analyzed qualitatively showing that the animated stories are not only interesting for the students in writing class but also enable them to learn based on their learning style

Abstract

This study aims at developing writing materials based on Eclectic Approach for Indonesian EFL learners. The material is mainly developed and used for teaching essay writing for the third-semester students in the English Department, University of Islam Malang. It is also expected that the materials lower their anxiety as the findings of the preliminary study. This R and D research adapted development model proposed by Borg and Gall with the following procedures: need analysis, developing writing materials, expert validation, revision I, try out, revision II, and final product.  The final product of this research is an instructional material for Writing III course which was developed by considering students' needs, levels, suggestions, and feedback from experts. It also made used of the principles of Eclectic approach to lower their anxiety in writing essay, such as providing much exposure toward the target language with less pressure, integrating the good sides of various teaching techniques, using real-life situation to make learning more comprehensible, considering the students' needs, teaching and introducing contextual grammar and vocabulary, and integrating all language skills.

Abstract

Nowadays, English literacy becomes the hot topic spoken among English practitioners. Literacy embraces four competences including listening, speaking, reading and writing; however, in this particular study the researcher only investigates reading and writing. Many ways have already been and will be conducted to promote such literacy. In this study, the researcher is eager to contribute in giving the springboard particularly for English practitioners to see how the EFL learners’ literacy culture especially in university level and to know the shortages they have faced to build their English literacy culture. The subjects of this study are eighty-two university level students majoring at English education in Unisma. The researcher uses questionnaire as the instrument in gaining the data needed which then were analyzed qualitatively. The result shows that the students’ literacy culture is considered low and needs to improve greatly.
