Abstract

This study is aimed at investigating how extensive reading affects students’ reading attitude and comprehension. Based on two participants’ pretest and posttest results and analyzing the results of interviews, the study reveals that extensive reading tends to promote participants’ reading comprehension as indicated by the improvement of their scores in posttest and participants’ reading attitude as indicated by their responses to interviews. Their positive attitude develops particularly because of the autonomy given to them to select any materials in their interest as when finding interesting reading texts beyond their current linguistic competence, which is not recommended to read in extensive reading, they struggle to understand them regardless of their reading proficiency. Their positive attitude is also shown by their increasing reading amount week after week and their dreams to have a private library and be lifelong readers. Moreover, exposure to a large number of different texts, a large array of words, and different topics enables them to build background knowledge which helps them understand texts better which subsequently affects their reading ability positively.

Abstract

Instead of continuing their studies, Vocational High School (SMK) students are prepared to work following graduation. Thus, instead of using general English, ESP (English for Specific Purposes) should be integrated in SMK. However, the Indonesian National Curriculum decided to teach both SMA (General High School) and SMK the same general English content. The purpose of this study is to see how graduates feel about the EFL materials they received at SMK. This research involved three SMK graduates as participants. This investigation yielded three recommendations. First, ESP resources should be incorporated to the English topic in SMK without omitting the need for general English materials. Second, SMK classroom activities should place a greater emphasis on practical communication. Third, extensive reading and/or listening activities should be implemented in SMK.DOI: 10.26905/enjourme.v7i1.7445

Abstract

This study investigates the perceptions of students towards Application-Based Crossword Puzzles and how playing this game can affect the development of vocabulary amongst students. Drawing on Vygostky’s Socio-Cultural Theory which states that the human mind is mediated by cultural artifacts, the nature of this game poses challenges and builds curiosity, allowing players to pay more attention to the words to fill in the boxes which subsequently enhances their retention of vocabulary. This game has very good potential to build positive perceptions and to develop cognition in the linguistic domain of players, i.e. the amount of their vocabulary. In this study, the researcher conducted interviews with eligible or selected student players to find out their perceptions toward this game and administered a vocabulary test to find out how this game had added to the retention in memory of new words acquired by the players from the game. The study findings showed that the participants perceive this game positively and it affects the players’ vocabulary retention positively as indicated by their test results. It is recommended that English teachers consider using Application-Based Crossword Puzzles to help students build their vocabularies especially as part of extracurricular activities.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the lexical semantic fields of reading textbooks in Universitas Negeri Malang, specifically in categories being, cosmic, energetic, substantial, terrestrial, objective, living, animate, and human. It used a descriptive qualitative method with a semantic analysis approach. The semantic approach was selected since we intended to comprehend the semantic phenomenon from the lexical-semantic field aspect of a specific textbook course. In detail, we started the research by describing the lexical-semantic field in the textbook and classified the words and phrases. Further, we identified the rational understanding of those words and phrases as a complete understanding of a word requires comprehending the connection with the surrounding words, known as the semantic field. The interconnection of words’ meanings is caused by their specific meaning in particular social situation and condition. Our analysis results suggested that the lexical-semantic field in the reading course textbook (Al-Arabiyah Baina Yadaika chapter 1) from Universitas Negeri Malang is dominated by the being and human semantic fields. Accordingly, the lecturers are suggested to complete the reading textbook with more contextual materials with different semantic fields following students’ interests.
