Abstract

This paper seeks to reveal the existence of the modern literary genre of Minangkabau, in the repertoire of modern Indonesian literature. Modern Minangkabau literature was detected existed since the 1930s through the printed media of the time. But the genre only showed its entity in the 1960s through Nasrul Siddik's short stories recorded in Saputangan Sirah Baragi (1966). The anthology of this short story gives a firm limit to the existence of the Minangkabau modern literary genre, and the kaba genre by strengthening its epigons in local print media, such as writers in the Aman Makmur newspaper , Singgalang , Semangat , and so on in the modern Indonesian literary horizon. So that it becomes a new hegemony in the modern Minangkabau literature repertoire in particular.

Abstract

This research is entitled "Semiotic Analysis in the Animated Film The Anthem of the Hear". The aim of this research is to determine the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth in the animated film The Anthem Of The Heart. Researchers use descriptive qualitative methods by recording, analyzing, describing the meanings contained in animated films using Roland Barthes' theory of semiotic analysis, namely by analyzing the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth. The data sources used in this research are primary and secondary data. Data collection techniques were carried out by documenting and watching the animated film The Anthem Of The Heart. The research results show that Roland Barthes's semiotics is interesting to use in analyzing a film and has a clear meaning that can be seen from every scene that the researcher analyzes regarding the meaning of denotation, connotation and myth in the animated film The Anthem Of The Heart. The meaning of denotation is a sign that is visible to the five senses, such as images of palaces and outstretched hands, then the meaning of connotation requires a deeper understanding of the meaning of denotation where the meaning of connotation can give rise to various meanings depending on the point of view of the person giving the meaning. The meaning of myth is formed from the meaning of denotation and connotation. According to Barthes, myth is not always related to culture or customs but is also related to ideology that spreads in wider society. It can be seen in the nine scenes that researchers analyzed, such as myths about crying, helping hands, and divorce.

Abstract

This research examines the inclusive understanding of Islam and pluralism proposed by Nurcholish Madjid in the socio-political context of Indonesia from 1970 to 2004. It aims to investigate how Madjid’s ideas helped reframe the relationship between Islamic ethics and the state during the New Order regime and the Reformasi era. Employing a critical historical approach—comprising source collection, criticism, interpretation, and historiography—the inquiry primarily draws on Madjid’s works and related secondary literature. The conclusion identifies that Madjid believed in a modern, inclusive, and humanistic Islam based on universal values and contextual theology. He argued that Islam serves as a foundation for ethics, rather than a political philosophy, and envisioned it aligning with Pancasila and democratic ideals. The research concludes that Madjid’s thought provides critical contribution that balances faith, humanism, and national identity in a pluralistic nation.

Abstract

In the early 19th century, Dutch colonial misinterpretations of Minangkabau society were not passive deficiencies but active instruments of resistance. Local communities strategically transformed colonial ignorance into autonomous spaces. This thesis reframes colonial narratives by highlighting polycentric agency—from coffee-hiding farmers to salt-innovating clerics—which systematically exploited Dutch epistemological blind spots. Thus, colonial failure was structural-epistemological, not merely technical-military; territorial occupation did not equate to political control. Consequently, the colonized Minangkabau society’s resilience oftenthe resilience of the colonized Minangkabau society often resided in its capacity to convert the colonizer’s weakness (ignorance) into a source of counter-hegemonic strength

Abstract

The emotional expression found within Syair Soenoer is not a simple sentiment but a profound and agonized representation of a soul caught in the crucible of a civilization-defining conflict. It articulates a deeply personal crisis that mirrors the larger schism tearing apart Minangkabau society in the early 19th century. The poem’s central figure is one who experiences a radical rupture with his past, his community, and his own inherited identity. This rupture is described through potent imagery of flight and exile, where the protagonist flees from the familiar landscapes of his youth— the "pantai yang lama" (old shore), the "malam yang dulu" (nights of old), and the "rumah nan basandi adat" (house built according to custom). These images are not merely nostalgic; they are the very foundations of his being, and his departure from them signifies a severing of roots. The act of leaving is imbued with a sense of finality and sorrow, suggesting an emotional state of profound loss and displacement. He does not leave wistfully; he leaves with such urgency that he does not even turn back, a gesture that underscores the trauma and desperation driving him away.

Abstract

This study delves into the feminist themes in contemporary Minang literature, particularly concerning urbanization and modernization. Specifically, it focuses on two short stories by Minang authors to explore the representation of feminism during the time of writing. Through these works, the authors aim to highlight the issues faced by women in Minangkabau, including limited educational opportunities, societal pressure to marry early, and the pursuit of decision-making autonomy. The discussion of feminist discourse in literature sheds light on the complex relationship between urban and rural influences on gender roles and expectations. Keywords: feminism, representation, Minangkabau, literature piece
