Key words: makna, model, historiografi, radikalisme, Islam di Minangkabau

The problem addressed in this research focuses on the socio-cultural transformation of the Minangkabau elite during the colonial period, particularly in Nagari Kurai. Using the historical research method, the study traces the evolution of the local elites through archival analysis and ethnographic records. The key finding reveals that the establishment of Bukittinggi as a colonial center and the spread of modernity in the early 20th century prompted the rise of a new urban elite, distinct from traditional authorities. In conclusion, the study suggests that colonial modernity played a pivotal role in reshaping cultural and political hierarchies in Minangkabau society.

The emergence of a new elite in Minangkabau, flourishing in the modern milieu of Bukittinggi city at the beginning of the 20th century, represents a pivotal case study in the dynamics of colonial modernity. These individuals distinguished themselves in the economic and intellectual domains, as well as in the authentication of symbolic status through lifestyle emulation of the Dutch. However, their integration into the social circles of both traditional and modern communities in Bukittinggi was met with limited acceptance. This phenomenon underscores a society that embraced novel perspectives on the colonial world without succumbing to colonialist ideologies. This raises pertinent inquiries: who were these new elites? Why did they seek recognition within their modern context in Bukittinggi despite existing within a reality of modernity? And what was the nature of the inclusivity process for these new elites as modernists, without becoming colonialists? This discourse elucidates the process by which the new Minangkabau elite negotiated colonial modernity in Bukittinggi between 1905 and 1942. The findings reveal that the successful negotiation of colonial modernity by the new Minangkabau elite served as a mode of restraint as well as alienation from the social realities of Bukittinggi. Firstly, the negotiation facilitated broader participatory avenues for the new elite of Minangkabau in early 20th-century Bukittinggi. Secondly, it paved the way for them to independently craft mediums of intellectual and inclusive modernity. Thirdly, this negotiation led to the creation of new cultural forms that amalgamated three essential values of early 20th century Bukittinggi: tradition, colonialism, and Islam.

This research examines the distinctive intellectual practices of Sheikh Abdul Wahab Calau at Surau Calau in Sijunjung during the mid-19th century. His contributions significantly enriched the intellectual landscape of Islam in Minangkabau, highlighting previously underexplored scholarly movements of the era. Employing historical methodologies—data collection, critical evaluation, classification, and historiographical analysis—this study contextualizes Calau (1830–1869) within his scholarly lineage, notably alongside Sheikh Burhanuddin Ulakan, a pivotal figure in the development of Tariga Syattariyah in the early 17th century. Calau's innovative pedagogical strategies reflected his personal experiences and adeptly mirrored and expanded the social structures of Surau Calau. Applying Giddens' structuration theory, this research vividly reveals the dynamic interplay between individual agency and social structures that facilitated intellectual transformation, keeping the audience engaged. Ultimately, Calau's authority derived from a robust scholarly genealogy, innovative teaching methods, and interpretative approaches to religious texts.

This research examines the inclusive understanding of Islam and pluralism proposed by Nurcholish Madjid in the socio-political context of Indonesia from 1970 to 2004. It aims to investigate how Madjid’s ideas helped reframe the relationship between Islamic ethics and the state during the New Order regime and the Reformasi era. Employing a critical historical approach—comprising source collection, criticism, interpretation, and historiography—the inquiry primarily draws on Madjid’s works and related secondary literature. The conclusion identifies that Madjid believed in a modern, inclusive, and humanistic Islam based on universal values and contextual theology. He argued that Islam serves as a foundation for ethics, rather than a political philosophy, and envisioned it aligning with Pancasila and democratic ideals. The research concludes that Madjid’s thought provides critical contribution that balances faith, humanism, and national identity in a pluralistic nation.

The Kampia craft, a traditional weaving of pandan leaves from Jorong Kuok III Koto, Nagari Matua Mudiak, faces sustainability threats due to modernization. This community service program aims to revitalize Kampia art by enhancing artisans' capacities, marketing innovations, and intergenerational education. The program was structured into three phases: preparation, implementation, and mentoring. The first phase included field surveys and the development of a roadmap. The second phase encompassed training in design innovation, product diversification, and branding and marketing strategies. The last phase ensured sustainability through ongoing monitoring and support. As a result, artisans had successfully created innovative products, and the Kampia community has emerged as a collaborative and marketing platform. Workshops and the Kampia Festival effectively showcased and sold 21 products developed from the training sessions. By adopting an integrative approach that combines cultural preservation and creative economy principles, Kampia has the potential to become a cultural icon and a premier local product.
