Abstract

Indonesia-Australia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement(IA-CEPA) is a strategic economic cooperation framework built by Indonesia and Australia with the aim of improving the economy and achieving the national interests of each country. This study aims to analyze how Indonesia-Australia's economic diplomacy efforts are through a case study of IA-CEPA. The research method used is a qualitative method with literature study and interview data collection techniques. The results of the study show that although Indonesia's trade balance still shows a deficit trend because the import value is greater, IA-CEPA is not fixated on the existing trade balance deficit. There are other sectors that help Indonesia achieve its national interests, for example through working holiday visas, Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA), increasing foreign investment (FDI), improving workforce skills, and people-to-people connectivity. The results of the study also describe that Indonesia-Australia's economic diplomacy efforts did not stop during the negotiation period for cooperation, but also continued during the implementation period when the two countries had to coordinate and harmonize in facing and resolving the challenges of IA-CEPA. The economic diplomacy between the two countries that was established helped Indonesia and Australia to achieve their respective national interests, where state and non-state actors played crucial roles. This is in line with the theory of liberalism which views cooperation in international relations optimistically and makes it a place of interaction for state and non-state actors.

Abstract

Japan is one of the countries that uses nuclear energy as one of its energy sources. As part of its responsibilities, this country also participates in maintaining nuclear safety, public safety, and environmental protection by engaging with the IAEA and UNCLOS. However, following the natural disaster in 2011, several nuclear reactors experienced leaks that contaminated the marine environment, prompting the government and TEPCO to mitigate the situation by storing the processed waste in new tanks. Several years later, these storage tanks reached full capacity, necessitating the disposal of the waste. Consequently, the government implemented a policy to discharge the nuclear waste into the Pacific Ocean. This policy inevitably sparked both support and opposition from the international community, considering cultural, economic, and political perspectives. This study aims to explain the impact on the international public regarding the disposal of nuclear waste into the Pacific Ocean as part of the Japanese government’s policy in 2023. The research method used in this study is qualitative data analysis, where data collection is based on various documents or records of previous occurrences. This nuclear waste disposal has become a focal point for the international community in scrutinizing Japan’s compliance with nuclear safety and environmental laws and how responses are shaped by this policy.

Abstract

The Tigray conflict and the Ethiopian Government in 2020-2022 were mainly motivated by dissatisfaction with the policies of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. TPLF as a representative party of the Tigray ethnic group attacked the government until it received a counterattack that further prolonged the conflict situation. The conflict then sparked international attention, including China. China played a role in bridging the conflict resolution indirectly. This study aims to review the efforts made by China in helping to bridge the conflict resolution. The method used uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The study found that China fully used a quasi-mediation diplomacy strategy in an effort to resolve the conflict. China's efforts are reflected through personal identity and the results of the interactions that were established. China promotes the principle of non-intervention and regional resolution, even providing humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. China is not directly involved in maintaining national interests, both materially and socially, in the form of applicable relations and norms.

Abstract

Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates have maintained a harmonious bilateral relationship since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1976. In the economic sector, dynamics relationship between the two countries reached a peak with the agreement of the comprehensive IUAE-CEPA. Indonesia subsequently leveraged this cooperation as an implementation of economic diplomacy to fulfill its national economic agenda. Therefore, this study aims to understand Indonesia's economic interests through the Indonesia-United Arab Emirates Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IUAE-CEPA). The author uses the theory of liberalism and the concept of national interest as analytical tools. The type of research conducted is qualitative research using descriptive methods. The author also collects data and information through literature studies, then summarizes and analyzes this data using data reduction techniques to draw conclusions. The results of the study indicate that IUAE-CEPA provides significant opportunities to accelerate the achievement of Indonesia's economic interests by obtaining a trade surplus through the utilization of non-oil and gas sectors, increasing investment commitments, implementing export market diversification policies to the Middle East region, and the prospects for developing its halal economic sector.
