Abstract

Abstract

“Sipping soft power” describes how simple activities such as brewing and enjoying coffee can be a subtle way to convey cultural values, strengthen international relations, and build a positive image of Indonesia in the eyes of the world. In the context of bilateral relations that have been established for over 75 years, coffee has transformed into a cultural symbol reflecting Indonesia's national identity. Using a qualitative case study approach with Nation Branding theory (Anholt) and soft power theory (Nye), this study utilizes data from official reports, scientific literature, and documentation of coffee diplomacy activities. The research findings indicate that the diversity of coffee flavors from various regions in Indonesia, born from tropical geographical conditions, fertile volcanic soil, and sustainable agricultural practices, makes coffee a representation of Indonesia's cultural and natural wealth. Coffee-drinking traditions such as tubruk coffee and klotok coffee are part of social life and offer authentic narratives that strengthen Indonesia's cultural appeal in the eyes of the American public. Through active promotion involving businesses, the diaspora, and state diplomacy, coffee has successfully created cross-cultural emotional experiences that bring foreign consumers closer to Indonesia's local values. This makes coffee not only an economic commodity but also a symbol of national identity that strengthens Indonesia's positive image in bilateral relations with the United States.

Abstract

Human Trafficking is one of the most complex and organized forms of transnational crime, with the province of East Nusa Tenggara being one of the most vulnerable regions in Indonesia. East Nusa Tenggara geographical location, bordering Timor-Leste and having sea routes to Australia, coupled with high poverty rates and low education quality, makes the province a transit area and primary source of victims of Human Trafficking. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of State Border Crossing Posts in combating Human Trafficking in East Nusa Tenggara, focusing on three of State Border Crossing Posts : Wini, Motaain, and Motamasin. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collection techniques through literature review, government documents, and interviews. The findings indicate that the presence of State Border Crossing Posts has positively contributed to surveillance, awareness-raising, and economic empowerment of border communities. However, its effectiveness is still limited by structural constraints such as insufficient human resources, infrastructure, inter-agency coordination, and difficulties reaching remote areas. Additionally, the role of non-state actors such as NGOs, religious organizations, and local communities has proven to be crucial in detecting, preventing, and assisting victims of human trafficking. This study recommends enhancing cross-sectoral coordination, strengthening institutional capacity, and increasing community involvement in the cross-border protection system more comprehensively.

Abstract

The Tigray conflict and the Ethiopian Government in 2020-2022 were mainly motivated by dissatisfaction with the policies of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. TPLF as a representative party of the Tigray ethnic group attacked the government until it received a counterattack that further prolonged the conflict situation. The conflict then sparked international attention, including China. China played a role in bridging the conflict resolution indirectly. This study aims to review the efforts made by China in helping to bridge the conflict resolution. The method used uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The study found that China fully used a quasi-mediation diplomacy strategy in an effort to resolve the conflict. China's efforts are reflected through personal identity and the results of the interactions that were established. China promotes the principle of non-intervention and regional resolution, even providing humanitarian assistance and sustainable development. China is not directly involved in maintaining national interests, both materially and socially, in the form of applicable relations and norms.
