Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs), particularly hypertension as a silent killer, are a major global health threat with the highest mortality rates. According to the 2018 Basic Health Research, the prevalence of hypertension in Indonesia reached 34.1%, and 29.2% in North Sumatra. In 2023, North Sumatra recorded 3,287,526 hypertension cases among individuals aged ≥15, yet only 18.61% received healthcare services. Medan had the highest number of cases (478,092) with low service coverage (9.43%). In 2024, Bagan Deli Subdistrict in Medan reported 457 cases, with most residents working as fishermen. This study aims to examine the relationship between attitudes, work patterns (including working hours, fatigue, sleep quality, smoking habits), and sedentary lifestyle with hypertension incidence among fishermen. A quantitative method with a cross-sectional approach was used on 95 respondents selected via accidental sampling. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test. Results showed significant relationships between hypertension and attitude (ρ=0.008), working hours (ρ=0.038), and fatigue (ρ=0.017). No significant relationships were found with sleep quality (ρ=0.488), smoking (ρ=0.057), or sedentary lifestyle (ρ=0.319). These findings may support the development of more effective hypertension prevention programs in coastal fishing communities.

Abstract

Hypertension is a common non-communicable disease in the community. A preliminary survey in the working area of Matiti Public Health Center, Doloksanggul District, found that 14 out of 20 older adults (70%) had hypertension, most of whom had low physical activity and poor sleep quality. This study aimed to determine the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality with hypertension among older adults, using a cross-sectional design with 99 purposively selected samples. Data were collected through interviews, questionnaires, and medical records, and analyzed using univariate and bivariate (Chi-square) methods. The prevalence of hypertension was 66.7%, with the highest proportion among those aged 61–65 years (46.5%), females (64.6%), high school education level (67.7%), farmers (73.7%), heavy physical activity (48.5%), and poor sleep quality (78.8%). Results showed a significant relationship between physical activity (p=0.042) and sleep quality (p=0.004) with hypertension. Promotive and preventive efforts are recommended to encourage a healthy lifestyle and increase older adults’ participation in Posbindu PTM, Prolanis, and Posyandu Lansia activities.

Abstract

With the increasing number of residents in a city, there will be excessive exploitation of nature, uncontrolled land use changes and a decrease in the carrying capacity of the environment. These various results have a potential to increase the frequency and severity of flood disasters. Flooding is a problem for the town because it leads in losses of property and lives, the emergence of health issues, damage to different infrastructure facilities and infrastructure, among other things. Although the government has been developing a horizontal drainage system for years, it has yet to decrease urban flooding. Consequently, a new technique is required to overcome flooding, specifically the use of vertical drainage. In an attempt to improve the community's living conditions, this activity's goal is to reduce the risk of flooding in Kelurahan Pasar Merah Timur settlement area. The advantages of this program include an improvement in the community's quality of life as a result of less intense flooding following the installation of vertical drainage. According to the test, 2 liters of water can be drained into the aquifer channel every second by the vertical drainage. So it can be assumed that if there is a puddle of water that cannot be drained by horizontal drainage of 4000 liters or 4 m3, it will take 34 minutes to deliver the water into the aquifer layer.
