Abstract

This study examined causes of suicide as perceived by educated adults. Description survey research design was adopted for this study. Population of the study consisted of all educated adults in Ondo metropolis, Ondo State. The sample comprised two hundred (200) educated adults randomly selected from the metropolis. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument to collect data for the study. Data collected was analysed using mean, ranking, t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The findings showed causes of suicide as seeing life as meaningless, terminal illness, traumatic experience, chronic pain among others. The results revealed that there is a significant difference in the perception of causes of suicide based on gender (t = 3.448). It was found that marital status does not influence the perception of causes of suicide among educated adults while religion does (F = 4.411). It was therefore recommended that both governmental and non-governmental organization should use all avenues to sensitize people on seeing life meaningful. People with terminal illness should be given social support by different groups of people around them. Peculiarity of each gender should be identified and addressed appropriately. All religions should encourage their followers to see life as meaningful no matter what is happening around them.

Abstract

This study examined perception of consequences of rape among tertiary institution students. A survey research design was adopted for this study. The population comprised all students in Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo. The sample consisted of two hundred and fifty (250) students randomly selected from the college. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data for the study. Reliability of the instrument was ascertained using Cronbach’s Alpha statistics which yielded a coefficient of 0.85. Data were analysed using mean, ranking and t-test. The results showed that consequences of rape are emotional disturbance, depressive symptoms, pregnancy and sleeping difficulties among others. It was also found that family type and marital status have significant influence on perception of consequences of rape among tertiary institution students (t = 7.192, p<0.05 and t = 3.185, p<0.05) respectively while gender and religion do not (t =5.183, p>0.05 and t = 6.030, p>0.05) respectively. It was therefore recommended that brief cognitive – behavioural programme should be administered shortly after rape to hasten the rate of improvement of psychological damage arising from trauma.

Abstract

This study investigated awareness and perception of artificial intelligence in counselling practice among counsellors-in-training. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. The population consisted of all counsellors-in-training (CITs) in Adeyemi Federal University of Education, Ondo. Two hundred (200) counsellors-in-training were randomly selected from Degree three (3) and four (4) as sample for the study. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument to collect data for the study. It was validated by experts in Test and Measurement. Reliability of the instrument was ascertained by using Cronbach’s Alpha statistics mean which yielded a coefficient of 0.83. Data collected was analysed by using frequency counts, percentages and standard deviation. Findings revealed that counsellors-in-training are aware of AI in education and counselling practice which are 87.5% and 61% respectively. The results showed source of awareness among CITs as internet (35%), friends (19%), lecturer (11%) and classmate (4.5%) in succession. The study showed 54% as the level of exposure to AI in counselling practice. Level of perception of usefulness of AI in counselling practice was found as low (43.5%), moderate (52.0%) and high (9%). Level of interest in using AI for counselling practice was revealed as 73% while the limitations of AI for counselling practice are issue of confidentiality (32%), network problem 29%), competence of CITs (23%) and getting consent from the clients (11%). It was therefore concluded that counsellors should work with AI and AI should work with counselling.

Abstract

This study investigated prevention of suicide as perceived by educated adults in Ondo metropolis, Ondo State, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for this study. Population of the study consisted of all educated adults in Ondo metropolis, Ondo State. The sample comprised two hundred (200) educated adults randomly selected from the metropolis. Structured questionnaire was used as instrument to collect data for the study. Data collected was analysed using mean, ranking, t-test and analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results revealed the perception of prevention of suicide as giving people hope for a better life after current problems are resolved, developing and implementing community-based suicide prevention programmes, reducing the prevalence of conditions believed to constitute risk factors for suicide among others. The findings also revealed that gender and marital status have no significant influence on the perception of prevention of suicide (t = 2.041 and 7.142, p>0.05 respectively) while religion has a significant influence (F = 1.645, p<0.05). The study recommended that people passing through difficult situations should be given social support in order to raise their hope for a better tomorrow. Community-based suicide prevention programmes should be developed and implemented. Every level of government should work on improving the standard of living of the citizens so as to reduce the risk factors for suicide. Also, people with psychological and psychophysiological symptoms of depression should be given prompt and adequate treatment.
