Abstract

This research aims to investigate the perception of teachers about the use of Hume AI for assessing students’ speaking skills in senior high school. English teachers (n=4) from public senior high schools in North Sumatra participated in this study. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with semi-structured interviews and field note observations. The data was examined by using thematic analysis. The result indicated that Hume AI has a positive impact on students’ enthusiasm and interest. However, several challenges hinder the optimal use of Hume AI in speaking assessments, particularly in spontaneous speaking, including their low motivation to learn English due to socio-economic factors, and insufficient access to technological infrastructure within schools. Despite these obstacles, teachers acknowledged the potential of Hume AI to enhance speaking assessment and recommended its integration as both a learning and assessment tool. These findings offer insightful information for teachers, policymakers, and AI developers looking to implement AI-based tools in language learning and assessment practices.

Abstract

General Background: Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has become a transformative tool in English language instruction, especially at the elementary level. Specific Background: The "Bright–English for Beginners" application is among the innovative platforms aiming to enhance early EFL learning through interactive, gamified, and adaptive content. Knowledge Gap: While existing literature emphasizes student outcomes, limited research addresses teachers’ perspectives and the practical challenges of implementing such technology in classrooms. Aims: This study explores elementary EFL teachers’ experiences using the Bright application, focusing on perceived benefits, pedagogical challenges, and instructional strategies. Results: Teachers reported increased student motivation, personalized learning, and improved engagement through multimedia features and assessment tools. However, challenges included unstable internet, curriculum misalignment, limited training, and skepticism from stakeholders. Novelty: Unlike prior studies, this research foregrounds the teacher’s role in MALL integration and highlights creative pedagogical adaptations—peer learning, digital portfolios, and real-world language tasks—as critical to successful implementation. Implications: Findings suggest that effective educational technology adoption requires not just functional tools, but robust infrastructure, curriculum integration, and ongoing professional development. This study contributes practical insights for developers, educators, and policymakers aiming to enhance early language learning through digital platforms.Highlight : Teachers believe that this application significantly improves student motivation and participation. The main challenges include unstable internet connections and curriculum compatibility. Creative strategies such as peer learning and contextual assignments reinforce the effectiveness of the application. Abstract

Abstract: The Community Service Program (KKN) in Sempajaya Village, Berastagi, was established with the aim of empowering women (PKK) by providing specialized training in utilizing used cooking oil to make aromatherapy candles. PKK mothers will learn more about how to process used cooking oil into useful products through this program. Furthermore, the program will create opportunities for potential home businesses in the local area, which will increase family income. The KKN team used a hands-on demonstration method to demonstrate how to make candles, including soaking used cooking oil, mixing dyes, and adding essential oils for scent. Based on the evaluation results, participants' understanding and skills in processing used cooking oil improved dramatically, and they were enthusiastic about launching an aromatherapy candle business as a replacement for conventional commercial businesses in the local area. Other village communities can use this KKN project as an example for community empowerment based on local capacity.         Keywords: Aromatherapy candles, Used cooking oil, Empowerment of PKK mothers, Sempajaya Village  Abstrak: Program Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) Di Desa Sempajaya, Berastagi, dibentuk dengan tujuan memberdayakan ibu-ibu (PKK) dengan memberikan pelatihan khusus pemanfaatan minyak jelantah untuk membuat lilin aromaterapi. Abstract

The use of artificial intelligence in English language learning in higher education continues to increase, but understanding of students' perceptions of ChatGPT as an academic learning partner remains limited. Therefore, this study aims to explore students' perceptions of the use of ChatGPT as an English learning partner and its role in supporting independent and academic learning. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. Data were collected through open-ended questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with undergraduate students who had experience using ChatGPT in English learning. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques to identify patterns and meanings within students' experiences. The results indicate that students perceive ChatGPT as an accessible, flexible, and personalized learning partner, supporting learning outside the classroom and creating a low-anxiety learning environment. ChatGPT was deemed effective in improving reading and writing skills through providing linguistic clarification and cognitive support. Furthermore, its use contributed to increased learning autonomy and academic self-confidence. However, students also expressed critical awareness of ChatGPT's limitations, particularly regarding response accuracy and its limited role in supporting speaking skills. Overall, ChatGPT is viewed as a complementary learning partner that supports, but does not replace, conventional English language instruction.
