Abstract

In the era of online media, the Takfiri movement uses websites and social media to propagate its religious understanding. In Indonesia, they also do the same. Through a semiotic perspective, this paper seeks to question how communication and interpretation are carried out by Takfiri groups in producing signs, and how they express signs in online media. The relevance of Umberto Eco’s semiotics is due to its communicational character, and as a contemporary semiotic philosopher, Eco has reminded of how sign production is happening in the era of internet technology. With narrative and semiotic analysis methods, this paper draws data from online media in the form of websites and social media such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook. The analysis shows that Takfiri content in online media, which creates radical attitudes in some circles of society, has been captured without a meaningful process, so there is no critical thinking process. The propaganda of Takfiri is expressed in the very well-known sentence, al-walā’ wa al-barā’, namely love and loyalty to believers and hate, and hostility to unbelievers, and it is a sign that Takfirism is an ideology whose followers are ready to commit violence in the name of religion.

Abstract

This study explores the mapping of radical Islamic movements in the northern coasts of East Java. Based on field research and using qua­litative approach, this study aims to answer the questionson democracy, Islamic state, the implementation of Islamic law (shari’ah), and women’s lea­dership. The study indicates that HTI, MMI and a number of Islamic boarding schools consider democracy irreconcilable with Islam. However, LDII asserts that democracy is a good system. To HTI, MMI and several Islamic boarding schoolsthe establishment of Islamic state in Indonesia is their desired main goal. In addition, HTI, MMI, and some Islamic boarding schools require firm implementation of the Islamic law, while to LDII Islamic law is a personal duty of every Muslim without any requirement of establishing an Islamic state. Finally, HTI, MMI, and several Islamic boarding schools firmlyrefused women’s leadership as apresident. Interestingly, LDII states the possibility of women to be a president.

Abstract

Nowadays, the world has been stunned by the acts of terror committed by women. This is done by Islamic terrorist groups, which have very conservative views on women. It has been frequently reported that these groups have threatened women from getting education and the "friendly" public domain. However, the terrorist leaders see that recruitment of women terroristsis an important matter. It is an interesting issue to analyze. Based on library research this article attempts to look at this reality as a part of the postmodern phenomenon, which seeks to deconstruct the already established discourse. The article examines the terror movement, relativity, flexi-bility, and deconstruction of the conservative texts about women carried out by the Islamic terrorist groups.

Abstract

Dalam dua dekade terakhir, kajian tentang pelibatan publik mengalami perkembangan pesat, baik dalam konteks perdebatan teoritik maupun eksperimentasi secara empiris. Banyak literatur yang sudah mendiskusikan pelibatan publik dari sisi penawaran, bagaimana melibatkan publik dalam tata kelola pemerintahan yang partisipatoris. Sebaliknya, sisi permintaan dari elit yang berwenang membuat keputusan relatif kurang mendapatkan perhatian. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini bermaksud untuk memperkaya diskusi tentang pelibatan publik berbasis inisiatif elit yang berwenang. Lebih spesifiknya, kami berusaha memahami bagaimana pelibatan warga melalui layanan pengaduan berbasis teknologi digital yang difasilitasi oleh pemerintah daerah. Kami berargumen bahwa secara kelembagaan layanan pengaduan warga memiliki dampak positif karena menyediakan ruang politik untuk menekan kinerja internal birokrasi yang buruk. Temuan dalam penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa layanan pengaduan warga tidak hanya berkontribusi untuk mendorong akuntabilitas kinerja internal birokrasi pemerintahan, melainkan juga membuka ruang politik bagi warga untuk mengontrol kinerja layanan pengaduan tersebut. Pemerintah kota Surabaya telah berusaha melakukan inovasi dan reformasi tata kelola pemerintahan melalui layanan pegaduan warga berbasis media digital. Namun, pada saat yang sama, pemerintah juga cenderung menggunakan inovasi demokratik tersebut sebagai bagian dari pencitraan politik. Studi ini memberikan kontribusi penting dalam literatur partisipasi publik berbasis inisiatif elit melalui penggunaan teknologi digital untuk mengakomodasi keluhan dan permintaan publik.
