Abstract

This research investigates the strategic role of the National Amil Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) of Cirebon City in fostering economic independence among mustahik (zakat recipients) through productive zakat programs that incorporate digital technology. The focus of this study is to explore how BAZNAS' empowerment initiatives go beyond simply providing capital by integrating structured business mentoring and facilitating digital transformation to stimulate entrepreneurial progress. By employing a qualitative approach with a case study framework, the research examines the real impact of BAZNAS' programs on the livelihoods of mustahik. Data for the study were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 12 mustahik participants, program coordinators from BAZNAS, and local field facilitators. Additionally, observations during entrepreneurship workshops and analysis of official documentation provided supplementary data to strengthen the research findings. The study reveals three key outcomes: increased access to business capital for productive ventures, a growing adoption of digital tools in the operations of micro-enterprises, and enhanced financial independence achieved through business development. The findings show that BAZNAS Cirebon City has effectively contributed to improving mustahik's business management skills, expanding their access to digital markets, and supporting sustainable entrepreneurship. These efforts align with the broader goal of zakat-based empowerment, especially in the context of digitalization. The study emphasizes that the integration of digital tools is vital to empower mustahik and increase their productivity, as it enhances their ability to reach broader markets and manage their businesses more efficiently. Furthermore, the research offers practical recommendations aimed at expanding digital literacy among mustahik, promoting technology-based entrepreneurship, and improving the delivery of digital financial services within zakat distribution programs. These recommendations seek to enhance the overall effectiveness of zakat-based empowerment initiatives in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively examine the role of BAZNAS (National Amil Zakat Agency) of West Bandung Regency in the distribution of productive zakat as a means to foster community-based business development during the first semester of 2025. Productive zakat, unlike consumptive assistance, is positioned as a strategic instrument to improve the economic independence of mustahik (zakat recipients), particularly micro-entrepreneurs such as small shop owners, farmer groups, tailors, and individuals engaged in similar economic activities. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach to capture an in-depth understanding of program implementation. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews with BAZNAS officials, serving as key informants, and the examination of relevant documents, reports, and activity records. The findings indicate that the application process for assistance is conducted through formal, verified requests, ensuring transparency and accountability, rather than accepting open-form submissions. The form and amount of assistance are adjusted to the specific type and needs of each business, and recipients are prioritized based on the eight asnaf categories, with a focus on those who already have ongoing business activities. In addition to capital provision, the program aims to empower mustahik to transition into muzakki (zakat givers) over time, thereby creating a sustainable cycle of economic empowerment. Monitoring activities are conducted three times a year to assess progress and identify challenges. However, the study also highlights constraints, including limited mentoring sessions and the need for more consistent supervision to ensure that the assistance translates into long-term economic impact. To maximize effectiveness, stronger collaboration among BAZNAS, local communities, and regional government is recommended, alongside capacity-building initiatives for beneficiaries. This collaborative approach is expected to reinforce the sustainability and impact of productive zakat programs, contributing to broader poverty reduction and community empowerment goals.

Abstract

Amal Madani Indonesia (AMI) is a zakat philanthropic institution based in Cimahi, West Java, with a vision to empower communities through professional, transparent, and accountable management of zakat, infaq, and alms (ZIS) funds. As a zakat institution, AMI focuses not only on the collection and distribution of funds but also emphasizes the importance of good governance so that the collected funds can have a real impact on improving community welfare. This study aims to analyze AMI's contribution to improving community economic empowerment, evaluate the efficiency of zakat distribution, and examine the practice of Islamic philanthropic governance in the Cimahi region. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques through field observations, documentation studies, and in-depth interviews with administrators and beneficiaries. The results show that AMI has a significant role in encouraging the socio-economic development of the surrounding community. The programs implemented are not only oriented towards distributing consumer assistance, but also focus on sustainable empowerment, for example through entrepreneurship training, mentoring micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), providing access to capital, and providing educational scholarships for children from underprivileged families. This strategy demonstrates that AMI is striving to shift the paradigm of zakat from merely a means of distributing welfare to an instrument for the economic development of the community. However, research also found several obstacles faced, including the program's distribution reach which is still limited to certain areas, limited human resources in managing empowerment programs, and low levels of zakat literacy among the community. The low understanding of some communities regarding the obligation of zakat has an impact on the potential for zakat collection that is not optimal. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve zakat education, optimize digital technology in collection and distribution, and strengthen collaboration with various parties, both government and the private sector.

Abstract

This research involves the DT Peduli program in an effort to empower the community's economy through the Mustahik Mandiri program. This program combines an Islamic philanthropic approach with the principle of economic independence, aiming to improve the welfare of mustahik while breaking the cycle of dependency. The program not only provides direct and sustainable financial assistance but also provides skills training, business mentoring, and full access to various economic resources. Thus, this intervention is designed not only to meet immediate needs but also to equip mustahik with long-term capacity to develop independently. The main vision of this program is to create a socio-economic transformation, where empowered mustahik are expected to transition into muzakki in the future. This process also strengthens the value of social solidarity and the strategic role of zakat in community development. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study strategy. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation of several program beneficiaries in various regions. The data obtained were then analyzed using empowerment and sustainable development theories as an interpretive framework to understand the resulting impact. The research results show that the Mustahik Mandiri program has had a positive impact, increasing the income, skills, and self-confidence of beneficiaries. Furthermore, the program has contributed to the formation of stronger social networks and the capacity of community-based small businesses. These findings confirm that the Mustahik Mandiri program can be a model for sustainable economic empowerment, with significant implications for improving community welfare and strengthening the role of zakat in national development.

Abstract

This research aims to explore the potential of paper waste as a recycled material that can be transformed into economically valuable products through a philanthropic approach focused on community empowerment and environmental sustainability. Paper waste is a type of waste whose volume continues to increase due to high paper consumption in various sectors. Without proper management, this waste has the potential to negatively impact the environment, such as soil and water pollution. Therefore, innovative strategies are needed to transform paper waste into new products that are not only environmentally friendly but also have market value. Through a community-based recycling program, this research emphasizes the importance of community involvement, particularly low-income groups, in every stage of the production process. The resulting creative products, such as handicrafts, decorative materials, and household items, not only extend the life cycle of paper but also open up new economic opportunities for the community. Profits from the sale of these products are allocated to fund social programs, including education, skills training, and other empowerment activities aimed at improving community well-being. The research results show that despite challenges in terms of limited technology, market access, and human resource capacity, paper recycling programs still have promising prospects if supported by various parties, including the government, non-governmental organizations, and the private sector. This support can include the provision of simple technology, entrepreneurship training, and effective marketing strategies. Thus, this paper recycling initiative is not only a solution to reduce waste but also a sustainable socio-economic empowerment model, providing dual benefits for the environment and society.

Abstract

This study discusses the optimization of the allocation of productive waqf funds using MATLAB through a case study on the Waqf Board of the Islamic University of Indonesia (UII) Yogyakarta. Productive waqf has an important role in supporting socio-economic empowerment, but its management often faces challenges in determining the efficient distribution of funds. The purpose of this research is to develop a mathematical model to optimize the allocation of waqf funds in various sectors such as education, health, micro enterprises, and social programs. The research method uses a quantitative approach with optimization techniques implemented in MATLAB to simulate various fund distribution scenarios. The results of the study show that the optimization model is able to provide a more effective distribution of waqf funds compared to the actual allocation pattern, thereby increasing efficiency and impact on community welfare. Thus, the use of MATLAB has been proven to help waqf institutions in formulating accurate data-based decisions and mathematical models. In addition, this study emphasizes that the application of modern computing technology can strengthen the role of waqf as an instrument of sustainable social development. The implications of this study show that the integration of mathematical modeling with modern computing tools can be an important strategy for Islamic philanthropic institutions in maximizing the potential of productive waqf, especially in Yogyakarta. This research also contributes to the development of Islamic economic literature, offers practical recommendations for waqf managers, and shows the application of MATLAB as a tool in economic decision-making. With this approach, productive waqf is expected to provide wider and sustainable benefits for the community, as well as be an inspiration for other waqf institutions in Indonesia to adopt a similar strategy.
