Abstract

This research investigates the strategic role of the National Amil Zakat Agency (BAZNAS) of Cirebon City in fostering economic independence among mustahik (zakat recipients) through productive zakat programs that incorporate digital technology. The focus of this study is to explore how BAZNAS' empowerment initiatives go beyond simply providing capital by integrating structured business mentoring and facilitating digital transformation to stimulate entrepreneurial progress. By employing a qualitative approach with a case study framework, the research examines the real impact of BAZNAS' programs on the livelihoods of mustahik. Data for the study were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 12 mustahik participants, program coordinators from BAZNAS, and local field facilitators. Additionally, observations during entrepreneurship workshops and analysis of official documentation provided supplementary data to strengthen the research findings. The study reveals three key outcomes: increased access to business capital for productive ventures, a growing adoption of digital tools in the operations of micro-enterprises, and enhanced financial independence achieved through business development. The findings show that BAZNAS Cirebon City has effectively contributed to improving mustahik's business management skills, expanding their access to digital markets, and supporting sustainable entrepreneurship. These efforts align with the broader goal of zakat-based empowerment, especially in the context of digitalization. The study emphasizes that the integration of digital tools is vital to empower mustahik and increase their productivity, as it enhances their ability to reach broader markets and manage their businesses more efficiently. Furthermore, the research offers practical recommendations aimed at expanding digital literacy among mustahik, promoting technology-based entrepreneurship, and improving the delivery of digital financial services within zakat distribution programs. These recommendations seek to enhance the overall effectiveness of zakat-based empowerment initiatives in the digital age.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how the concept of deliberative democracy is perceived and constructed within the intellectual discourse of Indonesian Muslim scholars. Employing a qualitative approach through literature analysis, data were gathered from academic works, including books, journal articles, and relevant conference proceedings. The analysis was conducted thematically to identify key patterns, categories, and overarching themes. The findings reveal three main points. First, the literature highlights the compatibility between Islam and deliberative democracy through the reinterpretation of shūrā, which is framed as a normative foundation aligned with modern practices of consultation. Second, the study identifies structural and cultural barriers—such as political polarization, elite dominance, and limited public space—that hinder substantive deliberation. Third, it highlights the potential for strengthening deliberative democracy through the integration of Islamic values, particularly by emphasizing maqāṣid al-sharīʿah, the ethics of justice, and the recognition of pluralism. In addition, the research introduces new categories, namely ethical deliberation and the rise of digital deliberation, both of which enrich the Indonesian model of deliberative democracy. Ultimately, the study concludes that deliberative democracy grounded in Islamic ethics is not merely a localized adaptation of Western theory but also makes a significant theoretical contribution to the broader development of deliberative democracy in the global context.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how e-commerce supports the digital transformation of MSMEs in Indonesia, with particular emphasis on social, cultural, and organizational dimensions. The research focus arises from the growing adoption of e-commerce following the COVID-19 pandemic, despite the fact that MSMEs continue to face major obstacles such as limited digital literacy, infrastructure gaps, and weak competitiveness. A qualitative approach with a collective case study design was employed to capture real experiences as well as the meanings constructed by business actors. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving 15 MSMEs located in Jakarta, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta, complemented by insights from MSME associations and local government representatives. The data analysis combined thematic methods with Miles & Huberman’s interactive model to identify deeper patterns. The findings highlight three central themes: first, e-commerce is perceived not only as a tool for modernizing businesses but also as a means of gaining social legitimacy; second, adaptation strategies evolve through improvisation, family support, and community-based learning; and third, the success of digital transformation is strongly influenced by external factors, particularly the role of associations and the availability of infrastructure. Collectively, the results enrich the Diffusion of Innovations theory and the Technology–Organization–Environment framework by incorporating a socio-cultural perspective, while also emphasizing the crucial role of MSMEs’ dynamic capabilities in navigating change. The study’s implications underscore the importance of community-based policies, locally tailored assistance programs, and more equitable and inclusive interventions by digital platforms. For future research, it is recommended to extend the analysis to rural areas and adopt a longitudinal approach to capture the dynamics of digital transformation over a longer period of time.
